    Folding on Fermi

    Hi folks,

I've been reading around folding on the new fermi architecture after being disappointed that it didn't fold off the shelf.

    I found this post elsewhere,

    http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.ph...=14465#p142193

and if I've read it properly those of us with a fermi will be doing the folding world a service by running memtestG80.exe (available from F@H on http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadUtils ) and allowing Stanford to receive the results.

I've just kicked it off on mine and it's seemingly run through without problem....

If I've misread things however, please feel free to correct me... Can;t wait to get this bad boy folding proper!

I thought that the desktop Fermi had 25% of the GPGPU abilities of the Fermi derived Tesla cards.

    Re: Folding on Fermi

Sorry - not my forté. Not read any of the details when I've seen Tesla mentioned. Assuming that'll be the next workstation card(?), I bet there's not too many CAD firms willing to leave their machines folding 24/7....

Imagine the book "Dummies guide to cooking with Autocad"

    Re: Folding on Fermi

Well I've done my bit tonight... 4x50 itterations then 1000 itterations

Test iteration 1000 (GPU 0, 1024 MiB): 0 errors so far
Moving Inversions (ones and zeros): 0 errors (47 ms)
    Memtest86 Walking 8-bit: 0 errors (327 ms)
True Walking zeros (8-bit): 0 errors (156 ms)
True Walking ones (8-bit): 0 errors (156 ms)
Moving Inversions (random): 0 errors (47 ms)
    Memtest86 Walking zeros (32-bit): 0 errors (640 ms)
    Memtest86 Walking ones (32-bit): 0 errors (639 ms)
Random blocks: 0 errors (250 ms)
    Memtest86 Modulo-20: 0 errors (2402 ms)
Logic (one iteration): 0 errors (16 ms)
    Logic (4 iterations): 0 errors (31 ms)
Logic (shared memory, one iteration): 0 errors (31 ms)
    Logic (shared-memory, 4 iterations): 0 errors (63 ms)

Final error count after 1000 iterations over 1024 MiB of GPU memory: 0 errors

Uploading data...succeeded! Thank you for your contribution!

    Now I await the results.....

    Make that 12.5%

But it should still be capable of some serious folding.

    Re: Folding on Fermi

the cards would last a matter of hours folding and explode. mines now idle at 74 and 78 diode after being on for an hour with most of that doing nothing.

roll on the arrival of my new water cooling blocks !

    Re: Folding on Fermi

If it's at 70+ at idle that does sound like you've got poor airflow. In my open testbed it was running at 40 something idle, and when I put it into my chassis it hardly changed. I'm so glad I got the EK Nickel waterblock though. Installation was a doddle and not I'm maxing at 54-55 Degs under load (in this heatwave too!!!) running memtest.

I would buy a second one but I need to sell other cards in order to buy, and I'm waiting to get 100 posts so I can sell - i'm boycotting ebay as their seller fees are ridiculous for the level of support they provide (i mean in backing you up when things go wrong)

Shame that there's no alternative to paypal too, but to be fair, i've not had a bad experience with that.

    Re: Folding on Fermi

i have just shoved em in for now as the koolance blocks show up later next week

theres also something buggy as card 2 with the decent airlow runs hotter after a while, its a bug with SLI that can be fixed by disabling SLI, roll on the water blocks !

    Re: Folding on Fermi

Gulp. My Corsair HX 850 850 W is looking somewhat inadequate now. Only got the one GTX 480 with W/C'ing so will stick for that for now. Need to upgrade the PSU AND the gfx card in one go and I'm not willing to spend another £600 for something that I can't use because the english weather has gone into heatwave mode!

Either that or someone else who lives near me has got a Fermi folding..... Not sure which is most likely..

    eek..

just checked my UPS's draw, its idle at 660w (22% of 3000w) running pc. monitor and all the other crap plugged in such as amp, modem etc.

turn on kombustor and it shot up to 44% about 1320w

    Re: Folding on Fermi

Have just downloaded the new beta client, and it's 5% the way through it's first WU. FAHMON reckons 12k points per day. That'll help Hexus folding along a little me thinks....
