Good time to buy a Gen 4 NVME drive?
Hi all,
I'm in the process of moving back to AMD after many years! (last AMD cpu was a 3200xp what an epic clocker that was)
I have my MOBO and CPU picked out but cant decide whether to invest in a fancy gen4 nvme drive now or wait to see what drive arrive next?
What has me thinking is the performance of the drives in the next consoles will appear in the PC shortly?
What would you do?
Thanks
Re: Good time to buy a Gen 4 NVME drive?
If you need it now, just buy it. You're not likely to see real world performance increases over what you can get now for a while to come, so anything more is just e-peen.

I pulled the trigger and my 1TB Corsair MP600 is arriving today :)
for everyday use the difference between gen 3 and 4 is marginal
Re: Good time to buy a Gen 4 NVME drive?
I was lucky enough to receive a free 500GB Gen 4 SSD in a gigabyte promo so I'm using the SN750 as a secondary drive and the Gen 4 as boot drive. After extensive research, I have to agree, the real world performance between gen 4 and a fast gen 3 drive is marginal. Although the prices these days aren't terribly far apart. Just look out for a drive with a heatsink incase your mobo doesn't have one as the gen 4 drives run pretty hot from what I've heard.

I'd say it's worth buying now and continue forward with peace of mind, instead of buying a Gen3 now and then upgrading later

Yes. I would go for a gen 4 now. Like someone said earlier, rather than upgrade later, stay futureproofed.
