im joining a gym soon with my mates and would like to tone my body what machines do i need to use and how much weights can i lift? i dont want to run or anything just tone my body because at the minute i am a but skinny

Usually, the gym would offer a guided tour and a free lesson on what machines to use for what you want to do on your first visit.
If their advice sounds useless, then we can sort you out with recommendations based on what machines they have there.
i find free weights are best for my body and i can work on different muscles/general strength
I am going to assume that you are completely new to the gym scene, if that is the case I agree with ShenBlade. You should be given a guided tour of the gym and equipment and how to use it. Start off gradually and you will soon know how much you can and can't lift and you can build from there.

just do sit ups every day to tone your stomach and then tie weights to your chest when it gets too easy!
If all you want to do is tone, do lower weightage, but more sets.
The gym should offer a good tour, as has already been suggested.
Dont have any links, that's just what my gym guy said when I was shown around my local gym. Upon reading up on it, I reckon it's just a myth so will remove it from the post :D
