Euro what?
Isn't it all politcal these days anyway? :p

Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
I don't particularly mind, Germany seemed as good a choice as any... :)
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
I've decided to back Switzerland. I always enjoy a tournament where the underdog wins, and if they can squeeze through Group A, along with Portugal, you never know!

I`ll be supporting torres and the lads :D

Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
I accidently voted for the wrong country, when i meant to press croatia, cant really tell till im wathcing it, but croatia will be my first choice atm, just due to Modric.
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
I will be supporting none of them, and will not watch a single game. If England aren't in it, it's not worth wasting time watching.

-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
I just voted for Portugal (:
Holland have a good chance, along with Spain and Germany!
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
Im backing portugal, sorry but Ronaldo is the main man and i have to stay loyal to him for what he has done for my beloved Man U this season,
Having said that i will be routing for Holland also.
:)

Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
Germany, only because I have £40 on them at 4-1 :)

Are you stalking me Sim? :)
And yes, I'm quite happy to support our country's athletes, even if I'm not a huge fan of the sport but if our country isn't represented there's no point.

Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
Croatia for me. Surprisingly nice place with generous people - I got given a Croatia footie shirt so it can't be anyone else. They also did us the biggest favour of the past 8 years. Shame that they don't have Eduardo after his horrific leg break. My second choice is Poland.
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
I reckon that the orange machine will get all the way to the semis and then throw things away horribly despite having a squad of individual talent (like they always do). I'd like to see Croatia take it, but... not sure. I'll be following it because.... it's football :)
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
Spain for me as it is every competition, they may well share Englands failures but atleast they play damn good football whilst they fail.
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
It would be nice to see Spain do something for a change, i agree - they offer much promise then usually dissapoint - a bit like England !

Poland, for my late Grandad.

Hmm, but i do see the logic in it, i think only france have ever done the double world and euro champions, and no one has ever won the Euros 2 times on the trot, so Odds would be against Both Italy and Greece.

Bah, so much for Switzerland, though, they deserved a draw in their game!
Looking good for Germany though, they seem the strongest of the teams we've seen so far.

Been some great games so far, Croatia vs Germany was a cracker last night! Croatia are looking a really decent side.
Should be some fireworks in the Italy vs Romania game tonight. :)

I'm looking forward to France vs Holland, should be a cracker. I was very disappointed in the way France played against Romania, they were s**t. They have the players but they don't seem to be gelling well together. And I hope Evra starts today, he has been world class for Man Utd this year.
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
That's because the France manager is a nutter and picks his team from what astrology tells him :O_o1:
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
Holland are on FIRE!!!! 4-1!!!!!
They have so far scored all the goals of the tournament. If you guys have not seen it yet, you must tune in to the highlights, Robben's and Sneijder's goal were world class.
France played very well in the second half, but Holland are just too good on the break. I think they should beat Italy (which once again will be a cracker of a game) and go through, as long as Holland beat Romania.
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
GO HOLLAND!!!!! How awesome was that performance? I thought they were superb against Italy, but this may have been even better.
Seven goals against the two World Cup finalists? Outstanding.
Love how they're always looking to score. Nistelroy could have gone into the corner in the 91st minute, but nope, back to the middle, string a few passes together, bang, great goal.
The group is in limbo now. Holland don't have to beat Romania, chance to rest a few players? Could open the door for Romania to win and sneak through.

id be tempted to perform "less than optimally" against romania, putting france and italy out instantly - comedy ensues
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
The thing is if they did that they may lose the momentum they have atm.
Its funny before Hollands first match I have radio 5 on and they where worrying about hollands lack of defence and said that they thought the team might not do much because of this. Now they are looking like serious contenders :D
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
I just hope we get to see Holland vs Spain in the semi final, it would be a better game than the final!
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
GO TURKEY!!! What a match!!! 3 goals in 15 minutes, Peter Cech fumbling, Czech hitting the post, red card goalie sent off, Tuncay in goal. You have to give credit to the Turks, never gave up. And the last goal, world class....
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?

Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
Turkish game was awesome! Been plenty of cracking games so far. :)
It's a shame this week's games are all on at 7:45 though!?
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
yeah its a shame, there are reasons though :)
i so wanted penalties yesterday
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
should be a good game tonight, be funny if Romania won though and France and Italy get knocked out heh
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
The funniest is that if either france or italy lose by a few goals and greece draw their last game then France or itally will finish witht eh worst goal difference :D
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
Well that France vs Italy game was pants
Something is up with the Dutch, they cannot stop scoring. EDIT: I think its their kit
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
France were just awful, throughout the competition!
Holland have been the best side so far, I'd like to see them progress through to the final. You'd be guaranteed goals at least. :)
Italy vs Spain will be an interesting semi. I kinda fancy Spain, but you can just never rule out Italy.
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
As poor and lucky as the Italians have been, i think they are worth a punt at winning the Euro's.
There is no substitute for a little luck and the 'true' class of their squad.
Things like the Buffon penalty save and then getting the result against the French is what champions are made of.
The Dutch are playing great football. Unfortunately (and i know being an Arsenal Fan), attractive football isnt enough to win competitions/tournaments.
I just dont think the dutch would know how to knuckle down and fight for a win when things dont go their way.
Winning pretty (the Dutch) is great on the eye but little else.
Winning messy (the Italians), is what make you are winner rather than a nearly team.
I would love the Dutch to win but just cant see it.
TBH aswell....only a maniac would write the Germans off.

I disagree. When they were up against the French, there was a prolonged period where they were kept under sustained attack. They managed to hold out and then broke away to score a goal. A simlar thing happened against the Italians. Their last two goals came off the back of 2 very good Italian attacks. They pushed onto the back foot, but managed to shove back and score.
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
So, here's the quarter final lineup:
Portugal v Germany (Thursday 19th)
Croatia v Turkey (Friday 20th)
Netherlands v Russia (Saturday 21st)
Spain v Italy (Sunday 22nd)
My reckoning, therefore, is Germany vs Croatia and Netherlands vs Italy in the semis. Croatia vs Netherlands in the final, Netherlands champions. Done. :)
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
I think they all look like good games in the making, Portugal - Spain final is my prediction but it could easily be Croatia - Russia - pretty close all round !
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
I'm looking forward to the Turkey v Croatia, should be cracker as they are both attacking teams. I would not be too surprised if Turkey somehow pull it off :)
In regard to tonight's game, I going for the Germans.
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
Should be a good game indeed, hard to say who will win tonight. Holland will be in final just dont know who they will face yet heh
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
They should all be really good games now, but based on the way they played last night... I'm looking forward to the Russia vs Holland particularly :)
Based on the way the two teams had played up 'til last night (Holland have been quite brilliant - Russia have been run-of-the-mill), I'd have suggested Holland wouldn't have had much of a problem beating them.
However... whilst I still fancy Holland to win, Russia showed what they're actually capable of last night, and if they can play like that on Saturday evening, I reckon they're gonna give Holland a good run for their money :)
I can't wait

Surprise surprise Ronaldo is largely redundant in a big match...
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
Well played Germany! Enjoyed that game. Croatia vs Turkey should be a corker tomorrow. I think Turkey's last game may have been their highlight, and they're probably knackered from the celebrations.
I'm predicting a Germany vs Croatia semi.

They are also missing a couple of key players, aurelio, gungor, volkan etc. However as long they give Croatia a good game I will be happy. I'm guessing three or four goals tomorrow, and possibly extra time and penalties if we are lucky. :)
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
I cannot believe what I just saw......The Turks just dont give up!!
Well done Turkey!!!!
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
Lol what a game, that last minute goal gave Turkey such a huge boost well done to them and unlucky Croatia
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
Oh man! That was so gritty from Turkey, but so so unlucky for Croatia! I feel really sorry for them after that, they played well throughout the game and had enough chances - when they finally scored, I really thought that was it. Can't believe the Turks did it again!
Feel really sorry for Modric, he played really well tonight and then ended up missing the first penalty.
Another great match, what a tournament it has been so far. The only big negative has been Mark Lawrenson's awful commentary - which is pretty bad!
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
Turkey are reminding of me Greece now but more entertaining :). Everytime they play, everyone thinks they are supposed to lose but they don't. I would not put it past the Turks to bundle their way past Germans.

You think?
And there you have it. Russia are through and yet again, the Dutch flatter to deceive.
Lets face it, the Russians were far superior to Holland tonight and the score is no reflection on how the Russians played. If it was, Russian wouldve scored 5 or 6.
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
Wow! The Russians were magnificent against the Dutch side. They controlled the game from start to finish.
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
Well played Russia, wasnt the best game but the better team won
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
 I'm laughing at the fact that at the beginning of the tournament hardly anyone would even consider that teams like Turkey or Russia could make it through the group stages let alone reach the semi final.
Gus weaved his magic today, and once again Holland have proved that it does not matter if you score 100 goals in the group stages, it does not mean you will go one to win the competition. So far all the teams that came second in their group have gone on to the semi final.
Anyone for a Turkey v Russia final?
-

-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
Still Germany or Italy to win it.
I got 6/1 on Germany (£80 bet) after they lost to Croatia.
Wish i had bet a saver on Italy before they played France aswell now :(
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
Ok, so I\'ve calmed down a bit...
I\'ll admit that Russia were better, but I don\'t think it\'s because they are a better side. Rather, the Dutch just didn\'t play as well as they were in the earlier games. They let themselves be pushed back into their own half far too many times, and they didn\'t spring back on the counter as they did do well in the group matches...
It just didn\'t seem like their game was just flowing, as it did so in the matches against Italy and France. It\'s like something changed in the team since then.... :(
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
One thing I don\'t understand is why did they not put on Robben? He has played very well in the last couple of games.

Come on now.
Credit where its due.......Russia played very well no matter how Holland performed.
The best side comfortably won the game and shouldve won it in normal time. Holland were outplayed in every department and if it was for Van De Sar, it wouldve been a very good scoreline in Russais favour.

I never said Russia were bad, I'm saying that if The Netherlands played the same kind of football they played against Italy/France, it would have been their game. I understand you're point about Van Der Sar, but I guess that show's why he was picked...

I dont think its becasue the Dutch didnt play well.
The Russians stopped them playing the way they wanted to. Holland just couldnt fnd the answers and use 'Plan B' when they needed to dig deep.
I wanted Holland to win aswell but they were just second best.
Here's to the Spanish losing tonight now.

He was injured in training, not even on the bench last night. Russia looked really good attacking last night but very poor defending - I got a feeling Italy might win this if they get through against Spain.
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
I have to say today was a victory for football and not just Spain. Italy so so negative, practically playing for penalties from the beginning and diving everywhere cheating.
Finally, the sour taste left after the last world cup when cheats prevailed is gone and I can look forward to a football match in the semi finals (Russia vs Spain).
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
Zzzzz.
got to say tonights match was boring.
Germany vs Turkey
Russia vs Spain
Both should be interesting matches.
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
Cracking first half, if you people are not watching the game, you should be. :)
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
Missed the first 18 min (came home late from gym)
Fantastic so far and both definitely worthy of winning.
Anyway, back to watch the 2nd half thats just started!

Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
Cracking game! 2-2 now, game on!
Come on Turkey, I'd love to see a Turkey vs Russia final :)

I would too, but sadly Germany stole the game at the last min. Still Turkey were excellent and provided great energy to the game.
I hope Russia wins tomorrow!
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
:( Heartbreaking....I so wanted the Turks to go through. They played like exceptionally well considering their injuries and they were so so unlucky not to win. They were the better side, but as usual the Germans get through. If only England played with as much passion as the Turks....
Tomorrow's match should be another cracker. :)
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
Aw shucks! Nevermind, the Turk's luck had to come to an end at some point, they'd already snatched one game too many. As for Germany, even though they were below par, you always suspected that they'd somehow get out of it. Cracking game for the neutral though :)
Tomorrow's game should be good, but Spain have been a bit average so far. Can't remember them playing particularly well in their previous games.
I'll be rooting for Russia as I like seeing the underdog do well. Hope it's another great game. :)
-

Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
Well not the 'cracker' I was expecting but a good game. Spain at the end of the day were just too good for the Russians, but still well played to the Russians, getting to the semi final is no easy task. And it would be nice if their was a third place match between Russia and Turkey.
The final should be interesting, tbh I have no idea who will win but I am edging towards the Spanish because the German defence looks dodgy, and Fabregas (who should start now) is on form. :)
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
Now England are the only big nation that has not won anything in the last 42 years. :D
Not the final I had imagined, Spain played well, and the Germans bottled it.

Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
I'm glad Spain won it, they have played the most entertaining and consistent football the whole tournament. So much nicer to watch a tournament without suffering the trials and tribulations as an England fan.
-
Re: Headlines - Who will you be backing at Euro 2008?
Can't fault Spain, they deserved their spot in the final and were clearly better than Germany.
Worth crediting the likes of Croatia, Turkey and Russia, too. They were surprisingly good, here's hoping it wasn't a one off.
