Giant XTC 4.5 Bike Alexrim wheels - can't pump up tyres

I'm a pleasure biker, I use my bike to town, go to the gym, to the pub etc etc. It's a great bike had no issues. Due to the weather last year and my working, it didn't get much use, I pulled it out to discover two flat tyres. No problem, bought a pump, the tyres won't got up. bought another bump (big foot pump - big air throughput) the tyres won't go up, it feels like there is a massive resistance stopping the air going in.

I've got Alexrim DP17 rims with Kendra tyres and presta valves, now I remember something ages ago about having to unlock the valves to let air in, but I can't find anything on the web. am I missing something stupid,

Had you forgotten to unscrew the valve top?

you have to turn the screw top to let air in, i had the same problem (if it is) when i had presta valves! much prefer schrader but all higher end bikes have presta... no idea why

    it really was that simple.

I remember you had to do something to unlock it, but I was messing with the washer on the bottom of the valve with obviously no results, rather than the top which actually doesn't look like it moves.

Smaller, lighter & less prone to getting poo in them too. Also makes any pump a simpler affair.
