    Bike been nicked

I'm currently in Leeds on site for work and I brought my bike with me to get from the hotel (Crowne Plaza) to work. I had it locked up in the evening in the underground car park and this morning some (censored) had the cheek to go down and nick it. My colleague caught him in the act but didn't immediately click what was happening.
Been reported to the police etc but I'm not very confident ill get it back.
Absolutely gutted, only had it a year and it cost me £400 :-(

I'm waiting for a new bike to be delivered myself and this is my biggest fear

Thankfully the area I'm in is okay, but it only takes one.

    Re: Bike been nicked

I was off work last week on leave. My week off started at 1am Monday chasing two scumbags out of my garage in my pyjamas after they'd taken a bolt cutter to the padlock and bike lock that were securing the garage and tried to just walk off with both my and the wife's bikes. Interestingly I've just noticed there's a news story on the BBC today about bike thefts being massively up, too. I assume they're seen as a soft target.

I've looked at bike insurance, but our "garage" is a metal construction, and all the policies require that bikes are kept in a brick "or wooden" outhouse (as well as being locked to an immovable object). No idea why a metal shed isn't good enough, but there you are

I've already had two bikes nicked in the 5 years I've lived in Manchester - that's one more than I've had stolen in the whole of the rest of my life. I guess in large urban areas it's a lot easier to shift stolen bikes.

Sorry to hear about your loss though, and good luck getting it back - I'm afraid (as you've obviously already realised) it's unlikely, but if the bike was marked or is particularly distinctive there's a chance it'll turn up.

    Re: Bike been nicked

Had it happen to me as well - my bike was in the close of my flat, and chained to the railings in the stairs. The close door was left open and someone with bolt cutters snipped the chain.

I keep my current bikes in the flat now even though they take up valuable space - between them they're worth around £1100 and as noted, the chances of getting them back if they're stolen are slim.

Good luck to you though, hope you manage to get it back.

Thanks for the kind words chaps. It's much appreciated.
I spoke to an officer on the phone earlier who said she was going to get all the cctv footage from the hotel (there should be a couple of cameras worth) and that there is a couple of main culprits doing a lot of bike thefts in Leeds at the moment and if it's one of them then there is a decent chance they will catch him given all the cameras. I think it's unlikely I'll get the bike back though. I'm gunna check my house insurance and write the hotel and letter expressing my disappointment at their lack of proactive security.

I suppose the most obvious question with people carrying bolt cutters around, is what's the best way to secure now?

I'm thinking foldable bike is the way forward. They look a bit camp but at least you can keep them in the house where they are considerably safer.

Beyond that, perhaps driving is cheaper!

    Removing bits?

Not that I'd think it would stop a scumbag from stealing a bike with no saddle or front wheel.

    I feel your pain guys

I always use a D-lock and cable lock together when parking somewhere exposed. Although, if someone really wants your bike, they can take a grinder and get through anything eventually.

    Re: Bike been nicked

for stolen bikes, have a look on pinkpike.com as theres been a LOT of stolen bikes doing the rounds. The shop where i work (North West MTB in Cheadle) recently had a couple of scrotes in taking pics of bikes on display. next thing we saw them on pinkbike being advertised as "available". Looks like someone was planning to steal to order. Quick email to pinkbike and call to the police ended up in a sting operation and 2 arrests.
