OK gang, I've almost finished building my new scummy-chav-thieving-git-proof bike shed, which means it's time to think about a new machine to go in it. Previously had a fairly standard road bike (~£350's worth), and while it was OK it wasn't the best for Manchester's appalling road srufaces.
Will mainly be used for commuting, and it likely to have some pretty full pannier bags hung off it on a regular basis, so needs to be able to take some luggage load. Drop bars is a *must*, just don't feel as stable with a straight bar. But, I'd also like to be able to some more training/exercise runs than I have been, so still needs to at least feel nippy, and ideally be stripped down to the bare minimum without too much hassle. Also, something with a little more tyre than a standard road bike - 23Cs are all well and good but they don't give you much margin in Manchester's potholes!
I'm torn between getting a fully kitted out tourer and seeing how much I can take off it for the training runs, or getting a cyclocross and seeing how minimally I can kit it out to still do the commuting/shopping runs. But I figure there are enough knowledgable folks on here to point me in a different direction if there's a better option
Also, does anyone know if there are any quick release type mechanisms for things like pannier racks, which would simply my life no end
I'd like to keep the budget to around £600 but could stretch further than that; since this will be through cyclescheme there is a hard limit of £1000 for everything.
