    I've just completed an ultra

For those of you who are into running, I just ran for 38hrs56 to complete 105 miles in the Lake District, from Friday 6pm until just shy of 9am Sunday. It was a good 'un. Never done that distance before.

    Lakeland 100 - 6850m of ascent
From Coniston in a big circle north via Black Sail Pass, Sail Pass, past Keswick to Dalemain, then back west via Fusedale/Mardale Head/Ambleside etc.

Highly recommended if you're thinking of doing it.
FWIW, I didn't recce the course, or use GPS (allowed but I don't own one) or Hokas (Inov8 315's instead), or get any blisters. I did, of course, use poles, like any sane person. Had to carry a pack with mandatory gear of approx 5kg (I don't own the ultra light stuff).

I have a ton of pics here which feature a creepy number of selfies - the idea was to see how my face would deteriorate over the distance - it did

Pics are missing for the last 12hrs, during which it rained heavily, with spots of hail & lightning. Always fun in the Lakes!

One can never stop saying Thank You

Probably 38hrs 55m longer than I'd manage to run for.

    Well done.

Re: I've just completed an ultra

Certainly puts the half marathons I'm doing at the moment into perspective!

I'm far too competitive for my own good but it always gives me a bit of extra motivation when I hear of someone going faster/further than I can...so thanks for that. Out of interest, what sort of training do you do for such a ludicrous distance?

Not as much as most entrants, lol, which is ironic since there was a 55% dropout rate

Most weeks were a 6-8 mile run on Monday nights, bike sprints on Wed morning for an hour on a fire road hill (yes, multi discipline since am actually training for a multi-day adventure race in Sept), intervals sprints on foot for an hour on Friday morning on a flat road, and maybe a half marathon or longer on the weekends on foot plus some mtb of 30-40 miles. All my stuff is off-road. There is some kayaking and swimming training thrown in, but not relevant to this ultra.

Mixed in was some gully/hill runs, usually for around an hour, which might include hiking while throwing a big rock (pick up, throw, repeat), once a week, at some time.

In terms of distance, I ran/hiked around Poole Harbour with some friends during an extended training session on June 29/30 (35 miles), a half marathon on June 22, and a 5 day hike with my son in the French Alps with a 20+kg pack in the last week of May.

Other people were doing far more, with regular 20-30 mile runs every weekend, plus another 30-50 cumulative during the week.

If you want to do ultras, TRAIN TO WALK, since only the elite run up the hills. My strategy is to walk uphill, and run the flats/downhills where the terrain permits. Many people assume they can walk well simply because they can run. These people tend not to finish

Plus train with the pack weight you will compete in.

Most important: to do these kind of distances, understand that it's 99% in your head. While listening to one's body, one can't let it dictate what your choices are (unless really injured).

One can never stop saying Thank You

just incase you haven't seen it yet. the terrible and wonderful reasons why I run long distances by theoatmeal > http://theoatmeal.com/comics/running

in that comic theoatmeal says "Running is not about building strength and wearing it like a fashion statement. its about finding strength and measuring yourself every single day"

so find something you love doing that makes you feel happy, then just enjoy it and everyone else be damned in their opinions.

fuddam, you seem happy enough to me, carry on

I still need to find something that makes me happy, I got knackered walking the mile and a half to work this morning

Zak: lol, a few of my close friends said the same thing - I look like I'm dying

That rock throwing/log carrying is no different to going to a gym for circuit training, but cheaper/in a nicer environment/closer to race conditions. You should try it

MadAussie: nope, I live in Surrey, up near Farnborough/Camberley/Bracknell. I just love Purbeck Isle for training/racing, so was about time my friends and I did a round of the harbour. We biked down there first, before the run, and did a 3 hr kayak from Wareham in the middle of the run.

Well done fuddam... That takes real stamina and guts, physical and mental.
