I think it's time to drop Rooney mainly because of the team's formation. In Italy's game, Baines was exposed with two against one situations as Rooney failed to track back when a proper midfielder would. Most of Italy's attack and goals went through that flank.
I'd argue Rooney is a great player but sometimes greater players do not play well in every game or in different positions. I didn't think Rooney played too badly and his cross for Sturridge to score from was top class.
Amazingly, England had the second best passing accuracy in the tournament.

It seems every world cup team has some frailties and probably this is the most open tournament ever. England could win the world cup!
Rooney should be centre, right behind Sturridge. That's where he is most dangerous.
No he doesn't track back down the wings, and I'm not surprised Baines was left exposed - why you expect Rooney to man mark a speed merchant? It was a bad idea, and proved as much when they switched around.
Regardless of the result and the exposed left flank, I have never felt so encouraged watching an England opening match - they actually played with some adventure, rather than the usual lack lustre long ball kick and run approach.
As I'm sure you're aware it can be frustrating watching England, they seem to have all the parts(great players), but never create that perfect whole, when it's really important. They lack self belief. I know the team are quite young, which I like, they're eager and energetic, but it often seems to me that they lack the maturity of their counter-parts. I think Rooney used to be young, but is now lazy, and overrated(and now he'll score the winning goal!). But it is just great to see some of the world's greatest players, at present, as part of a great spectacle. A dribbling Mesi is a thing of great beauty! Even Arjen Robin!
I'm so glad Wellbeck came off, he just wasn't making any difference.
Sterling had a few moments against Italy but his end ball was lacking overall.
I hoped Barkley would have featured from the start more.
Cahill was solid tonight. But the biggest thing was the lack of running off the ball from England players to support the guy on the ball and give him options.
Even if England is knocked out of the tournament, I still believe we have the making of a really good England team. Young players who are very technically adept. I think the story of this England world cup is one of a manager out of his depth as a master tactician.
Roll on 2016, 2018 etc.
...and finally I can start watching and enjoying the games from a neutral perspective
I don't get excited watching England anymore, the tabloids hype them up to be a team full of Messi's and Ronaldo. It's obvious they are not a world class team and they should be treated as such, not some over hyped team in the media. England are not as good as they once were, the golden generation of Shearer, Beckham, scholes e.t.c was a missed opportunity to win a major tournament.
Lol even Costa Rica the so called whipping boys might top the group. England were never a world class team but they are showing promise with the young players coming through.
The manager looked out of their depth and even admitted he wouldn't change his tactics if he did it again, which just proves he is either clueless or doesn't have the quality in the squad to change games.
