Question Let's talk weight benches and weights.

    Hi folks,

I'm getting a large shed built soon with the intention of sticking a weight bench in it (yes, yes, I'll use it!) and I'm after any advice. I'm not going to buy a cheap Argos style bench but I don't need a top of the range one either.

I'm aware each has its limits and I figure something at 200kg would give me body weight + plenty of future capacity.
I'd be looking for something for chest press (obviously) and extras like a pad for concentration curls or crunches is just a bonus.

For weights I need a bar and ~ 75kg ish (that's top end for now) to go on it. I've already got 2 x 10kg dumbells with iron plates.

I'm planning on putting down ply sheeting with a layer of foam interlocking tiles on top to absorb shocks.

I've not really got an idea of budget yet.
    Any suggestions or advice?

    Thanks!

    Rob

You are doing it wrong. Kebab and chips is a very good way to give you body weight.

If I was 200kg of muscle I wouldnt need a bench, I'd just go around bench pressing mini coopers as my workout

Re: Let's talk weight benches and weights.

I'd recommend a power rack and building around that. The cheap £130 one I bought form ebay has been alright, my only complaint is that the nuts and bolts are cheese grade specials, and after disassembling the rack to move to a new flat, half of the bolts ended up with no discernible thread. Ended up ordering new M10 nuts and bolts, A2 stainless no less, all's good again.

The power rack's horizontal bars have saved me from dropping a few kg on my face on more than one occasion, I'd never bench press solo without them. Point being, what ever rack you go for, get one with face and self-asphyxiation protectors - or what ever they're called.

As for the bar, the minimum that'd fit on the power rack is a 6ft, but barely so a 7ft is recommended. I currently use a 6ft bar from Mirafit (link below), it's as cheap as the horrible stuff you find on ebay but it's actually really nice for the price. Plates, the cheap DKN and Body Power Olympic plates from ebay are good value, aesthetically they're a bit rough... but whatevs'.

    I can't recommend a bench because I fabricobbled mine out of 3x2's.

Also, rings are nice to have to do dips and stuff.

    Here's my set up:

Good point, I'd not thought of a rack. I'll have to see how high the roof will be to see if I can fit a decent height one in there.

Cheers for recommendations on plates, I'll take a look at those

Re: Let's talk weight benches and weights.

Yeah, unless you're going to have someone with you all the time who's strong enough to rescue you, I wouldn't even consider not having a rack with horizontal bars to keep the bar off you.

It's not just a compression issue either - if suddenly your knee goes, or you feel dizzy, whatever it is, you don't want to collapse in a heap with 80kg coming down onto you.

I'm no expert though, so you might want to look at the advice here if you haven't seen it before: https://stronglifts.com/squat/#Equipment

Re: Let's talk weight benches and weights.

I am also looking into a rack, but since I am not sure of my ceiling clearance, I might go for a half rack instead of a full cage. Not too sure if I will lose out anything other than the chin up though.

I'd thought the same, I can do without the pull up bar so not sure what's lost by going for a half rack.

Re: Let's talk weight benches and weights.

I've been eyeing this up, mainly because it's fairly compact (not sure of clearance in my soon to be man shed) and of course it's pretty cheap http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331717188972 any thoughts?

    Coupled with a cheapish/plain bench I reckon it's a good start?

Two 20kg bags of rice will be cheaper.

    Edit!!

On a more serious note I don't think I would want to trust Ebay for that sort of thing anyway!

    Second Edit!!

Just to clarify you should confirm whether they are a reseller for that company.

Anyway, you can get it directly from Mirafit for less money anyway:

    Just 2 x 20kg? I'm insulted

Good spot on the shop, I've not looked around except for ebay and usually decide THEN try to find cheaper

    Rack £80
    Bench £50 (??)
    Bar £50
70 odd kg of Olympic weights (£150??)

Ouch this is getting expensive, I might just spend that money on protein bars and each them in front of the TV.

Well you could try lifting them for like a 10 mile walk??

Plus when you get hungry you could always cook the rice.

I suspect you could get secondhand weights to save on the initial outlay though.

I'd thought that but we don't have a car so pickup is out of the question if I need to get lessons and a car then this is getting even more expensive

Some people will deliver - might be worth scouting Ebay for a delivery only listing which is local and asking if they will deliver for a small fee??
