Rubbing down and respraying a bmx.

By one chance or another I have got my hands on an early 1990's mongoose BMX. It is structuraly sound but needs doing up. What is the best way to clean it up and then respray it? Should I get it done by someone who knows what they are doing or could I do it myself? Where is a good place to get bike bits? Should I just use the bike shop I get my mountain bike stuff from (Action Bikes in Wimbledon)? Help a sad n00b at such things!

I would personally take it to a small, local body shop.

Sounds expensive! I have found a couple of rough guides on the internet, so i think I may well do it myself. Have started to take it apart today, but have run into a couple of problems. Will need a new seat, post and clamp. Not too hopeful for the pedals and crank either... Will finish the stripping when I have some larger tools and clamps!

    Edit: and all new breaks!
