Whats The Best Way of Gaining Weight?

For some reason i cannot gain weight. For instance before i went home for xmas i was just under 10 1/2 stone, now after the xmas feasting period i'm 9 1/2 stone i cannot understand how i've lost that much weight.I'm not a healthy person to be honest, i gave up running for my athletics club when i was 15 and it took me 3 years of no exercise to gain that extra stone.

Ok so theres some background info, the reson i'm asking this is that i'm going to be joining a gym today to help get my stamina up and maybe try and get my stomach toned a bit. Theres not much point me doing weights as i dont think my skeleton body can develop arm muscles. So does anyone know a good way of me gaining weight while undertaking a fitness regime (sp)?

    Edit -

Basal Metabolic Rate just done thisi little test and it tells me i would burn 1638.7 calories by just staying in bed. I'm 21, 5ft10 and 133 lbs. Whats your BMR guys?

First thing I would do is see a doctor. Get a medical done before you begin any form of wieght gain/reduction/exercise.

If you start exercising moderately then you will gain weight if you are very thin at the moment. Muscle fibre is quite dense.

To be honest you are so underweight there is probably a specific cause of it. Either you aren't eating properly (which, given the feasting, is unlikely) or there is a medical cause. Tape worm or liver disease See a doctor!

I'm the same, Just over 9 Stone, can't put on weight without eating like a horse for weeks, but i regularly excerise and eat fresh food every day. My body just burns energy quickly.

Exercising and eating, turn fat into muscle which weighs more, only way really i've found to do it.

This was exactly what I was thinking when I posted my reply. Parasites like tapeworm are very common and they zap all the nutrients from the food you eat! If you do have such a thing it's a very straightforward cure to get rid of them!

You should also get your BMR (basal metabolic rate) evaluated. You could just be burning loads of calories naturally.

I cannot stress the importance of seeing a medical specialist or nutritionist if you are about to make big physiological changes to your body.

I'd also keep a running list for a minimum of 3 days, preferably 1 week prior to seeing your GP, of the food and liquid intake you actually have. Record it at the end of each day as a minimum, but ideally as you are consuming. Also weigh yourself first thing in the morning prior to doing anything on each of these days (ie prior to taking a dump!).
This will at least give the doctor or possibly after referral nutritionist some more specific information to go from - sometimes i find in my line of work (dealing with comsumption of a different sort) that people's recollection of "what i do" is in fact not the same as reality.
I'm commenting on an internet forum. Your facts hold no sway over me.

bmr is a bit of a joke - everyone knows that some people have naturally high metabolic rates - i personally eat as much as i want and never go above 13 stone (normally sit just under 12.5).

as for gaining weight - anyone can gain weight/muscles if they want - some people are naturally better at it but theres a high chance that a large reason behind your skinny stature is because you just sit on your pc all day rather than exersizing

    When I was 28 I weighed 10 1/2 stone @ 5ft 10 1/2. Soon as I hit 30 it all changed

Now I'm just over 14 stone at 37 Work out regularly & use protien shakes to build muscle. If I stop then I loose weight quite rapidly, evening out at around 12 - 12 1/2 stone. Anyone can build muscle reasonably rapidly with the correct diet & exercise regimen.

Gaining weight is easy - it's gaining muscle that is hard.

The body remembers when times were harder back in our hunter gatherer days and therfore wastes nothing - so any excess calories you eat are stored one way or another.

It is purely a mathamatical thing. If you eat 100kcal and only use 50 of them then you store 50, transversly the same goes for loosing weight. Also at teh end of the day clories are calories - healthy eating is different, it is liek the old saying of which is heavier a tonne of bricks or a tonne of feather, 100 cals of fat and 100 cals of carbs are still 100. Therfoer if you eat more than you burn you will eventually gain weight - 99.9% of have the same base metabolic rate but some people are natually sedantary some are active - fidgeters etc

Now to gian muscle you will see things like good nitorgen balance and lots of protiens etc etc. However this is jsut part of it you have to train hard and sleep lots as this is mostly when you repair and hence grow. The best hing is a proper baalnced diet broken down into 6 regular meals per day, if you look up Zig Xag dieting you can find out more about protien etc. Also if you struglle to eat regualr then you dont have to resort to expensive branded meal replacements - buy a can a of slimfast it is a meal in a can and good if you re on the go, I regualary buy them and my wife and I ( she is a super gym bunny also) get some strange lloks when we have 12 of them on the conveyor at the checkout, you are simply not using it as a meal replacement but as a supplemental meal
    Anyone seen my opteron?

After 30 & I'm now 14 1/2 stone. I miss my really fast metabolism, I want it back along with my waistline!!

Workout your basal metabolic rate ie the amount of calories needed to sustain your current weight then increase it with calories made up from clean food sources, cut out saturated fat, sugar etc. Eat 1-1.5 grams protein for every lb of bodyweight . Oh the hard bit lift some weight .

Get your coat, and order yourself 2x 16" meat feast pizza's - repeat for 2 months.

Just kidding, your doctor might be able to help - when your at the gym, maybe you should try weight lifting and such? the muscles will bring your weight up too.

You dont want to put weight on you want to put on lean body mass which is difficult time consuming and just damn hard. Get to a good gym where there are ppl that know what they are talking about , fitness clubs are not the best option, however better than nothing

Can be hard but you just have to keep at it. You can pick up some cheap weights for £15, 5 minutes a day is all you need tbh.

I read that if you do more reps with less weight then you get bigger muscles but not as strong, but if you do less reps with more weight you become stronger (but muscles will take longer to grow). Makes sense I suppose.
