I only used the clips about 4 times, then changed to a mountain bike as I sort of damaged my normal bikes wheels by jumping of a quite big kerb near where I used to live.

The trick I found was to try an anticipate when you are going to break, and then as I was left footed - as soon as my left foot was at the bottom of the cycle, remove it and then come to a stop.

Most of the riding was down a bridled cyclepath though, so there was very little vehicle interaction.

you'd be surprised how easy it is to forget you're clipped in! I was fine for two weeks and then I had to slam the brakes on for a pedestrian that had walked out in front of me and there i went. Slowed down sharply, kindly advised the pedestrian that perhaps they should look before walking out into the road and as I went to take my foot off I realised my doom. Down I went.

Seriously though, there ought to be a little allen key hole somewhere on the pedals and loosening those off a bit makes it so much easier to get your feet out in an emergency. It wont be long before you're twisting your feet off every time you take your foot off a pedal (clipless or not)!

    eh?

Usually, it's land on the front anchor with everything, wave your back wheel about in the air a bit, stop THEN put your feet down.. (unless you're a big girl that is )
