    Beer and the belly...

With the weather as it is, its just too tempting not to sink a few beers down.
However, as I'm thinking of getting rid of this belly, for those of you that have done so and still drink beer, is there like a "safe" amount you can drink without putting on the pounds?

A relative of mine has stopped drinking beer altogether and runs a lot and lost so much weight, however I dont wish to be so extreme and not drink beer at all...

Hmmm beer is a major enemy when it comes to weigh loss/fat burning im afraid. Several reasons:

    1) Beer contains loads of nutritionally useless calories. Excess calories will be stored
2)Alcahol of any kind keeps your liver busy preventing it from attending to its fat processing duties. The liver has to process the booze in your system before it can move on to processing fat.
    3) Beer makes you crave a pizza/kebab/chips etc any greasy food high in saturated fat

Switching to shandy should cut out a few calories. Switching to wine would save loads of calories but its not as nice as a beer. You could drink spirits and a small mixer.

The trouble is alcahol is really bad if you trying to lose fat because it ties up the liver. Maybe just drink 1 or 2 nights at most?

Low carb beer, e.g. Michelob Ultra? Expensive, though...

Shorts with diet mixers are much better - I've switched to G&Ts for summer and it's working well Makes me all posh too.

Aside from low-card things (and I'm not aware of any low-carb versions of real beer anyway) then no. I've watched my waist expand alarmingly over the last few months - even a few beers combined with lower than usual excercise does it. You really need some cardio-vascular stuff if you're to avoid the belly.

I think the reason beer leads to so much weight gain is that we drink it late at night so we take in 1000+ calories (+ takeaway etc) and then fall asleep

we should all get pissed first thing then go to the gym

getting shandy instead is not an option as you will get laughed at

Too true , spirits are the way to go imo. I tend to drink them neat, but cranberry/ornage juice is an option or diet coke.

If you keep the mixers small you can go for a sugary one, then a lot less calories/unit alcohol.

Beer is the enemy of the fat-concious, but it's so good in this weather! I'm off to greece on sunday, this summer hasn't helped my beer belly. My first one ever!

Alcohol tends to cause bloat and additional "water weight" too, so if you plan on losing weight properly - cut it out for a few weeks and see what difference it makes.

First thing - sort your diet.
    Second - sort your exercise.

If you 100% don't want to take the step to cutting the devil's piss out of your diet, consider having beer as a "cheat". Eat clean foods all week, no alcohol, etc, then have a few beers and a kebab on a friday.

2nd: Good advice on here, but 5lab's is best....walk to the pub!

3rd: Threlly is a good guy, and he speaks the truth EXCEPT that WINE is JUST AS NICE if not NICER than beer

Diet coke has almost zero calories... so theres no point in having a spirit without a mixer if you dont like it straight if you think it will save on the calories... although by trebling the size of the drink, as long as its a diet drink... it wont impact it at all.

The spirit does the damage... each shot has 50-60 calories in it.. so a single JD and diet coke is not too bad... compare it to be a double... with normal coke and its going to be nearly 200 depending on the amount of coke (~42cal per 100ml)

Orange juice is a killer too... althought its good for you... if your trying to cut calories it wont do you much help... the natrual sugars... plus the ones we add as well make it almost as bad for you as coke (Although you can argue your getting your vitamins )
