    Are smoothies really worth it??

ok so im completely changing my lifestyle, after drinking myself overweight during university its time to put down the Guinness and pick up the fruit, but what i wanted to know is are smoothies really worth it??

i picked up one from work (250ml) and it claims to have:

    1 x full mango
    1 x full orange
    1/2 x banana

in it, however, on the reverse it says that one bottle is equal to just ONE of my five a day daily recommended portions. What i dont get, is if i just ate the mango, the orange and banana (full banana not half) by themselves, then i would have had THREE of my daily portions. So how the hell is a smoothie just one? Is it worth drinking these, or am i just better to munch on some fruit and drink more water??

smoothies are "less" good for you because of the amount of stuff that gets lost - for example, the best bit of an apple is in the peel, which isn't included in smoothies because it makes them gritty

that's not to say a smoothie isn't good for you, but the effect really is less than the sum of its parts.

as for tropicana, in theory it's fine, but the actual end result is HIGHLY processed. if you want something off-the-shelf which is really highly fruit-based, then look at Copella for juice, and Innocent for smoothies

agree with hex, anyone who says u can buy pure orange juice 2 ltres for a pound fifty is lying or they have an orange farm
innocent are great but costly, coppella are nice too i would agree but tbh i would just eat the fruit lol.

Definately better to eat the fruit... more fibre, cheaper etc...

Although I have to say, I do love a good pure fruit smoothie

I've had a lot of sobering thoughts in my time.... It was them that started me drinking.

thats what i hate.. they advertise everywhere 'oh eat ur five fruits a day' but look at the price of fruit more expensive thn a chocolate bar or a pack of sweets by far :/

mate i completely agree, i went shopping yesterday and instead of buying the usual student food of frozen pizza's, crisps and lager i went for brown rice, fruit and innocent smoothies. i nearly slapped the woman at the till when she totalled it up, it cost me the same amount of money for half the amount of food i got when i was buying crap

a 75 Cl bottle of Moet & Chandon Brut Imperial NV costs £25.99 - which means £34.65 a litre.

    a 1 l carton of Innocent Mango & Passionfruit Smoothie costs £2.99

    now, i only have two maths a-levels, granted, but i'm pretty sure 2.99 isn't =~ 34.65

the original Tropicana OJ has no added sugar, only that already in the juice.

As far as the Op's question if you read the dietary recommendations they say that only 1 of your recommended 5 a day should come from juice so perhaps the smoothie companies are just following that line?

this now makes total sense, i hadn't heard that before so it makes things alot clearer. I'll guess i'll stick to drinking my one smoothie a day and still enjoy fruit.....i guess a smoothie is just another 20th century "quick fix" to trying to get your five a day
