SSD and HDD Query
Hey,
I got thinking the other day, and just wondered if it is possible to run both a 2.5" SSD and a standard HDD together? Like a RAID setup or what ever?
Would this have any repurcussions (sp?) as far as software/hardware goes, like any dodgy drivers or bugs etc?
I'll be posting another thread about what SSD to get aswell, as I don't have any idea about them tbh.
Ideas?

Re: SSD and HDD Query
I would have thought the speed difference in RAID would be problematic, but running them as separate JBOD disks will be fine. Check out the latest Custom PC - they have a huge SSD Labs this month.

Re: SSD and HDD Query
Running an SSD with a standard HDD would cause performance issues. The SSD would have written the data before the HDD had chance to - this would cause the RAID controller to have to wait until both devices were ready (i.e. the HDD).
I'd never advise separate brands/models/sizes/types in any RAID array.

Re: SSD and HDD Query
Would it be possible to have the OS on the SSD, and just use the HDD as storage?

Re: SSD and HDD Query
yes, that would be a very good set up!

Re: SSD and HDD Query
I would recommend doing your research before diving in and buying a SSD, I swapped out a WD Raptor for a OCZ Core 64GB and really wish I hadn't botherd. It causes the whole machine to freeze up at times, and not to mention it can only be realistically be run in IDE compatibility mode.

Re: SSD and HDD Query
Yea, I just wanted to work out whether it is even possible to use them in the setup. I'll do more research into what drives etc, but just wanted to know if i could do it before I went ahead in spending time researching :P

Re: SSD and HDD Query
If you're buying an MLC SSD (particularly the popular OCZ ones) then realistically you need a hardware SATA/RAID controller with onboard cache, otherwise it the JMicron controller built into the drive just can't cope. It really is the Achilles' heel at the moment.

Re: SSD and HDD Query
So it's not really worth going down the SSD route atm?

Re: SSD and HDD Query
If you're going to throw money at it, it'll pay you back big time. If you're going in half-hearted with just a single OCZ Core 2 running off the motherboard SATA, then it has very limited benefit.
Worth it yet? Not even slightly for 99% of us.

Re: SSD and HDD Query
if you're going the ssd route it prolly means you have a lot of money to spare.. go the full way and get the intel x25 .. tested as the best ssd available..
or wait a while for samsung to release their new ssds which will have 256gb capacity
lots of pretty charts here http://techreport.com/articles.x/15931/2

Re: SSD and HDD Query
Ty for the link. I don't have alot of money, but wanted more info on if it was worth going down that route. Yeah, only thing is that samsung and intel are expensive :P
