I have to admit that I haven't been the most up to date with SSD technologies, and there are quite a lot I did not understand, notably the cause of performance decay as the drive fills up. The articles explains all the basics and while a bit long, and feel a touch personal at times, gave me a much better understanding of SSD drives today (incidentally, you can't prevent the decay by simply half-filling the drive buy continue to create/delete new drives).
It looks like the OCZ Vertex (and indeed, drives from other manufacturer who choose to use the same controller) is worthy of the interest it has attracted. Personally I still can't justify the cost (over £3/GB), but it seems to be the cheapest SSD that properly beats the VelociRaptor (nearly) all round.

At the very least it should. I'd like one for mine too once they become affordable. Can't justify £3 per GB for a Vertex, and 120GB is really a bare minimum of I'd want for my boot/app/game drive. As soon as that drive or one with similar performance drops to under £2 per GB though, I'll probably go for one. As far as read performance is concerned, those drives are pretty close to saturating current SATA ports, so right now I am more looking forward to lower price than even better performance (not that I would complain - write performance could use more work though - but even those are getting better for MLC drives). For my next motherboard though, I'll definitely want SATA 3.0. By the time I do my next build (1.5-2 years from now), I would expect SSD to be be cost effective enough to be a non-brainer when it comes to primary drives.
