Hi all,
I want to buy a low capacity SSD for an upcoming HTPC build.
Ideally it will be around 30GB.
The thing is, I don't need it to be massively fast or anything, I'm more getting one because of its low heat/power/noise consumption. As long as performance is equal to a HDD I'm happy. Needs to be reliable.
So, the lowest priced SSD that meets the above criteria, anyone?
Was looking at the new crucial drives, are they any good?
I can personally recommend the Crucial 64MB M225 SSD. I chose this over other SSDs for the 5 year warranty, potential TRIM support and low price, a little over £100. Crucial recently released a firmware update supporting TRIM but I'm yet to update my SSD.
EDIT: For £20 less, Novatech are selling the Samsung 64GB MLC SSD here. Shorter warranty period though.
Does the Novatech Samsung have TRIM support?
Unfortunately no and as far as I know the firmware cannot be updated on that drive, at least for the time being.
Sorry for hijacking the thread, I'm also looking for SSDs (32/64GB*4 @ RAID0). I have a hardware raid controller with 256MB cache + battery backup so I think cacheless SSDs are fine. Any good recommendation for the fastest setup at minimum cost?
If your wanting an SSD for it's low power consumption, surely it's smarter to get a Hard-Drive for ALOT less and the money you save can go towards the 'small' addition on your electricity bill.
Also means more space. I'd hate to only have 30GB, and only having 30GB of SSD is even worse, it's just mocking you... All that power and you have to remove things to add more... lol.

For half the price of a Crucial 64MB M225 SSD you can get a 500GB 2.5" 7200rpm HDD, the high platter density delivers performance similar to their 3.5" cousins.
Most 2.5" drives are very quiet, even the 7200rpm drives can be inaudible. Power consumption is also minimal, most 2.5" drives consume no more than 2.5W and can easily be used in place of an SSD where power consumption is important.
Unless you really want an SSD, I'd suggest you go for a 2.5" HDD for a small low power HTPC. The Western Digital 500GB 2.5" drives are pretty good.
