fastest hard drive

whats the fastest hard drive curently on the market and im not talking abt ssd (too expensive)

i done abit of research and i found ppl said this hdd was good: WD1002FBYS

but im sure ppl on this forum had more exprience with hdds so would be nice to hear from you

Velociraptor is still the fastest one but again depends what you exactly mean by 'the fastest one'

Spinpoint F3's have decent sustained read speed but fail short on access times where Raptor is far superior...

Is that on a money no object basis or best 'bang for buck'?

Like Spoon said, Velociraptors are about as good as a mechanical HDD gets but, the cost is high and capacity is not huge.

On the 'bang for buck' I think the Samsung F3's are about as good as it gets.

I would suggest looking at ST31000528AS Barracuda 7200.12 SATA 3Gb/s 1TB Hard Drive too.

The 7200.12 and F3 drives are both 500GB/platter but the F3s are newer and faster then the 7200.12s. Both are very quick though - if you can get a great deal on the 7200.12 drives then they would be ideal otherwise I'd go for an F3.

If you want the fastest traditional hard drive it's probably going to cost as much as a SSD and not be as good anyway?

Agreed, but ATM there are still things to consider before buying an SSD ie they wear out far quicker than HDDs, performance deteriorates over time which requires full erases to restore performance, they have a massive cost per GB compared to mechanical drives and ATM there are a lot of bricking firmwares being released...

I was under the impression that both of those had been more or less disproved/fixed, on the second point with regard to TRIM and the fact that even after deterioration they still boot velociraptors into touch?

They still wear out relatively quick (even though some MFRs offer 10 year warranties they don't cover wear and tear - go figure - and apparently they generally last several years. After spending hundreds on one I'd want it to last more than that...) and while TRIM does help, most of the upgrades which enable it have been bricking drives and even with it working properly performance still degrades. Yeah they will still be quick but it's still something which would annoy me.
