Has my SSD become inferior? - Upgrade/Pricing/Panic! Advice Please Gents :)

    Hi All,

So i've hit a bit of a brick wall. 6 months ago I purchased the following Samsung SSD drive:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/64GB-...State-HDD-(SSD)

    Price currently: £390
    Specs are:

    Capacity: 64GB
    Edition:
    Form Factor: 2.5"
    Case: Aluminium
    Connectivity: 1 x SATA 3Gb/s
    Memory Type: SLC-Flash
    Read: 100 MB/s
    Write: 80 MB/s

Now this is where my quandry comes in. My friend has just bought this new crucial drive:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/128GB...B-s-64MB-Cache

    Price: £276

    Manufacturer: Crucial Memory Type: MLC-Flash
    Capacity: 128GB Read: 250 MB/s
    Edition: Write: 190 MB/s

    Form Factor: 2.5" Cache: 64MB

It would appear that this new drive is going to rape mine inside out, and is of course double the capacity. Would it be a safe option to sell the samsung at this stage and "upgrade" to the Crucial? I still dont understand why my samsung is still crazily priced, when its pretty inferior to my way of thinking. All i can see that it has going for it is the fact that it is SLC and therefore going to last a jolly long time in comparison, which im starting to think i couldnt care less about as its only ever going to be used as an operating system drive anyway.

    Your thoughts please gents.

SLC is great for servers. That's why you bought one over an MLC right?

While that Samsung isn't the fastest SSD around, the only thing important here is that its still quite some distance better than regular HDDs, sure the sequential reads might be slower than a regular HDD but that isn't the only factor with drive performance, nor is it a very important one (unless you transfer files all day for a living)

If you ran a random read/write benchmark on both those drives, they'd be very similar.

(around 25meg/sec for 4k random read)

Those 200meg/sec high sequential numbers are good for marketing, but your PC spends its life doing random i/o, and thats the reason SSDs are so superior to spindle HDDs

(around 0.5meg/sec for a spindle HDD on 4k random read)

SLC is more expensive than MLC

And of course you bought yours six months ago so expect it to be a lot more expensive

You've just paid the price for being an early adopter

Price of SSDs should continue to fall, all other things being equal

Re: Has my SSD become inferior? - Upgrade/Pricing/Panic! Advice Please Gents :)

I guess if you could sell yours and replace it without spending any more cash, then it would be a good idea. But replacing it with a slightly bigger yet still expensive SSD for the sake of a little extra bench marked performance would be a waste of money.

You'd be better off waiting until SSDs come down to a more sensible price in general and then getting a new one, writing off the expense of the original as adopter tax.

Bottom line, your Sammy is still going to knock the socks off anything HDD based anyway.

Re: Has my SSD become inferior? - Upgrade/Pricing/Panic! Advice Please Gents :)

Given that it's SLC your Sammy will keep going as long as you need it to. What exactly is it that your Sansung is currently preventing you from doing on your PC? Nothing? Then why change it?

As you say, it's SLC so it'll last - that means there's no reason to get rid of it until such time as either you need a bigger drive, or SATA becomes obsolete (at which point there's bound to be someone who'll buy it off you to stick in an old rig). As you're only using it as an OS drive sequential speed is pretty much irrelevant to you: you wouldn't normally move large files about regularly on an OS drive. Changing components to gain performance increases that you won't even notice is beyond pointless - and this way you get to laugh at your mate a couple of years down the line when his early-generation MLC drive carks it and your SLC keeps going strong

    Oh no!

You bought some computer equipment and then it becomes out of date. Welcome to the real world.

I seem to remember that those Samsung SLC drives were on offer from Novatech for £100 not long ago.

Thanks fellas Always good to get some opinions from you guys here, besides the pretty pointless post from abaxas-im sure everyone on this board is fully aware of the price point you pay for early adoption of a technology. Special thanks for the sequential/random access point from mikerr. Looks like Crucials marketing got my back up for a moment

I got the drive at a good price btw, £186 inc postage back in April (from the states). Looks like the going rate 2nd hand can be around £150, so it might be worth having a think, but I guess I will stick. A few more gigs on the local drive could come in handy, but far from necessary.

Since when has a statement of fact been useless?

Statement of fact is fine, I just felt the execution was a bit derogatory.

So what have you decided? Sorry my recent SSD purchase has made you panic about your own!

And scaryjim - I was under the impression that MLC drives will last at least a few years, by which time I will have probably upgraded anyway, so I don't see the problem!

If you need the extra speed, get a faster MLC that supports TRIM and it should last a long enough time. Ive got the same Samsung in my netbook, nice drive and does everything I need it to do.
