I am going to be backing up my media collection, so with them being large files, around 5GB on average, I am going to need alot of space. I am looking at around 1.5TB or 2TB which doesnt cost the earth and is relatively quiet, performance isnt a huge factor as it is simply storage, with occasional viewing of the files. Which is the best drive you guys would suggest for this? Internal HDD btw.

As it's for storage, a 5400RPM drive would do nicely, WD Green 1.5TB is what I would recommend. ~£83 works out at 5.5p per 1GB of storage.
Highly recommend the WD EARDS line of drives. I have 4x 1.5TBs in a RAID-5 array. I did have three Samsung F2 drives previously, but they kept dropping randomly from the array, I couldn't even complete a full long format without errors. They have been relegated to offline backups now.
I'll be adding another 4x 1.5TBs in the next few months.

I have two 1.5tb samsung drives. the HD154UI model samsung which I use as mainly offline back ups. They work well, but I had to RMA an earlier one as it was faulty.
TBH, I tend to stick to the next-to-biggest size for HDDs. When 1tb drives came out, the first one of them I ever bought was knackered. Then, when I got my first 1.5tb, that was knackered too.
Now, my server has 1tb drives in it (next-to-biggest behind the 1.5 and 2tb drives) and I regard them as my "stable", safe drives.
Yeah, it's superstitious, but there's an economic aspect to it as well, obviosuly: once the "biggest" sizes get cheaper, then they've also had time to iron out any kinks.
That theory doesn't bode well for me at all :stop: just bought one of the new 2TB Samsungs! Just hope you just had bad luck and I've got very good luck!Quote:

I've got two F2 Eco drives. 1TB and 1.5TB. They tick all boxes as individual storage drive (quiet, cool, no speed demons but perfectly adequate for media access). Never used them in an array though.
WD Eco drives are pretty tried and tested though. Still, the reason went for Samsung was because of this tread: http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums...er=asc&start=0
In fairness, I've not heard masses of horror stories involving WD Eco drives dying left and right so it's probably a non issue. But at the time, the drive was too new for me to be sure, and combined with the lower price of the Samsung, it did it for me.
People still download Pr0n as opposed to streaming it. How very odd....Quote:

Surely if it's a drive for storage, you'd want the cheapest price per GB of storage no?
2TB drives aren't cheap enough atm IMO. 1.5TB drives seem to be the cheapest price per GB storage right now.
Yes 2tb are slightly more expensive than would be right for the capacity point. But only around £10-20 more so. So not too bad.
