Question Intel SSD on the way - Setup advice needed

Just ordered an 80GB Intel SSD from SCAN - on offer at the moment for £165.

I need a bit of advice - my PC is only a month old so not much installed on it at the moment, so should I make an image of the current drive and restore this to the SSD or install Windows 7 from scratch?

The only thing on the drive I am worried about losing is some game saves for Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2. Can these be copied over easily enough? Mass Effect 2 was purchased off Steam so would I need to download it again if I reinstall or can that be copied too?

Also is there a way to make an image or backup using Winows 7 or do I need to get hold of some imaging software?

Also is there anything special I need to do after install to setup the SSD properly or is it all automatic?

    Thanks

Personally I'd start again, but back up everything.

You can backup all you Steam games into an installer to save redownloading them - I think the option in the men is "Backup Steam Games" off the top of my head. However this doesn't back up all the saved game files - these need to manually found. The location of which varies from game to game, but a google search should tell you if it's not obvious.

With W7 it pretty much sets itself up - you don't need to do anything. If it is new, it probably already has the latest firmware too, so you should be TRIM enabled already.

Excellent, thanks for the quick reply - I have been away from PC gaming for a while so didnt realise you could do that with Steam.

Fresh install it is then - I suppose until I format the old drive I always have the files there to find so there isnt a lot that can go wrong

Cant wait to see the difference.

Another question, I am going to leave my 1TB Samsung Drive in for storage and installing some apps and games I wont use as much - will it power down when not in use as its quite bloody noisy and it would be nice if it wasnt heard unless in use.

Yes, after a little while of not being used. But when you're on a SSD you'll quickly notice how slow the Samsung is to respond!

I would rather not have the Samsung at all.

Depending on how things go with the space on the SSD i may not need it.

BTW, how do you thank someone on this forum? Cant see an option to thank you...
