Hard Drive Speeds? 5400 Vs. 7200?

So, at the moment i'm looking at buying a new Samsung F3 Hard Drive, but i'm having trouble deciding between the 1TB version at 7200rpm or the 1.5TB one at 5400rpm.

How much of a difference in speed is there between the two drives? I'm going to use it for games & storing/editing video files.

Whats the speed difference & which do you guys reccomend?

Re: Hard Drive Speeds? 5400 Vs. 7200?

If you're editing video files, I'd maybe suggest the faster drive. Just simply because that can get demanding.

I personally don't know if there is a big difference overall for other things. Hopefully someone else can shed some light on that, or has benched the differences.

if only for storage then 5400 is fine

but if editing (lots of read/writes) get 7200

Definitely go for the 7200. Games only need the hard drive on loading, but the 7200 will be 3 to 4 seconds quicker. Editing video is quite hdd intensive.

But then if you need more than 1tb then you need more than 1tb.

Re: Hard Drive Speeds? 5400 Vs. 7200?

Ok, so i've decided that I'm gonna go for the 7200rpm HDD but now i'm thinking of going for a
1.5TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11, which has the 1.5TB capacity & also the speeds i'm looking for.

Does anyone have any experience with this Hard drive, or other suggestions? I'd say my budget is about £80-£90 for the Hard drive.

    Thanks,
    Steve

Re: Hard Drive Speeds? 5400 Vs. 7200?

I'd definitely go for the faster speed particulary with gaming/editing where you will want the fastest read speeds but why such large storage? If you buy a large one now in a years time it will probably be double the size and twice as quick. Why not get the minimum now and then consider getting another one later on?

Re: Hard Drive Speeds? 5400 Vs. 7200?

Well right now I need this size of storage because I will be working with a large amount of high quality/HD video files. The reason i'm going for the HDD now is because i've been planing this upgrade for a while and will be coming into some money in a week.

    Oh. In other words porn.

I'm always dubious about going for a single, large sized drive in case something goes wrong.

A terabyte is still lots of space. I would judge mainly on price difference here. On reliability I would have thought that 1 drive would mean half as many failures as 2! Besides my samsung f1 drive hasn't failed yet (well over a year) - touch wood! Go for the 1Tb unless the price for the 1.5Tb is especially good.

I think video editing (particularly HD) is one of the rare occasions where RAID0 might be genuinely beneficial - if you could stretch your budget a little over the 1.5TB F3, pick up 2x 7200rpm 1TB drives and combine them in a striped array, you'd have both the STR and the capacity you need.

Having said that, there's also a good argument for using the drives independently (one for source/preprocessed material, the other for destination/postprocessed) - this way they can read and write concurrently (not possible with a single drive or striped array).

Needless to say, whatever configuration you choose, you'll also need to budget for a reliable backup method if the data is of any importance...
