    Trayless hard drive rack thing.

I want to use some bare SATA hard drives as a back up system and be able to remove them after doing the backup.

I've seen an Icy-box product that can do this but, Is there anything else that you recommend. Just needs to house a single 3.5" drive and connect to SATA or ESATA. and then be able to just pull the drives out afterwards without having to take the side off the PC.

Re: Trayless hard drive rack thing.

I think your issue is going to be that a lot of motherboards don't support hot-swapping with the onboard SATA, so you may not be able to just "pull" the hard drive after the backup has completed...

or version 1 of the sharkoon docking station which is USB only so not quite as fast as eSATA

Or the Icy box version http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Icy-B...SATA-interface which does have usb & esata but cheaper.

don't have an esata port? http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Akasa...kplate-adaptor you can now

Or you could just cut a hole in the side of your case and have a sata & power lead hanging out, not prety but it works (you need AHCI mode to be on to do this so it's hot swapable, not sure if you need it for esata)

I think one of these would be better.

Indeed it looks to be exactly what Sputnik wants.

I must have a dozen of them now.

That is exactly the one I was looking at but, Just wondered how good it is or if there is something better? all I want to do is occasionally put the drive in it, Back-up to the drive using TI and then remove the drive for safe storage until the next back up.

Open cover, place hard drive in, close door. How wrong can it go?

They're brilliant. The only negative I can think of (and I'm really clutching a straws here) is that it doesn't come with an adapter for 2.5" laptop drives.

You could have your SATA controller in a mode that doesn't support hot swap and fritz the controller?

Or does the IcyBox implement hot swap internally? 'Cos it just looks like an extension caddy to me...

Re: Trayless hard drive rack thing.

    It is just an extension.

Seriously, how many of us have systems without hot-swap functionality on desktop PCs now?

I suppose there are a few who have it set to IDE mode, but that certainly doesn't fry the controller (I doubt it would anyway), it just isn't recognised until the system is rebooted.

Re: Trayless hard drive rack thing.

tbh, I'm not sure if mine's set in IDE mode or AHCI, but I suspect it may well be set in IDE mode: I guess it depends on what the BIOS defaults to. Although I'll give you that it's less likely to be a problem now than it was ~ 5 years ago.

And yeah, I didn't mean the sata controller itself could be fried, but I think you could corrupt the on-drive circuitry by pulling it without it being properly "ejected" though?

I can do hot swapping. So there will not be a problem but, I will shut the system down to install and remove anyway.
