Which SSD for approx £120?

Well as explained in another topic, it looks like I'm going to have to reinstall Windows. If I'm going to spend time putting everything back they way I want it, I'm tempted to do it on a SSD drive this time.

I underestimated the cost of them, thinking £100 would buy me approx 80GB, but it's more like £120 for high-performance 60GB drives.

Sticking with a budget of approx £120, I'm looking at either the Corsair F60 or the OCZ Vertex 2E 60GB. I gather these are pretty much identical, with Sandforce controllers and excellent all-round performance.

Are there any other options I should consider at this price/size point?

Any quick replies & suggestions appreciated - hoping to order in time for despatch tomorrow, as I really need my main computer up and running again by the end of the week!

I'd say get the Corsair F60 tbh, they get amazing reviews from everywhere, and it's made by Corsair so you can always guarantee excellent build quality and performance .

I had one, and while they do perform well they do seem to have a very high failure rate.

I replaced the Corsair F60 with one of these. Can't really fault the drive, but I have a Marvell SATA3 chipset\controller, which means the Crucial runs faster in SATA2 than SATA3, which is a little annoying - I can't see the point of SATA3 if it's going to be slower than SATA2. Only real issue with the c300 is the relatively slow write speed.

So I'd probably go for the OCZ if I had my time over again.

Mine failed after 24 hours. There's a number of issues with the Corsair drives, well documented over on their forums.

I suffered from the drive just dying and not being recognised by the BIOS/Windows and hanging the system when in Post.

It was a cracking drive for the 24hours it worked though, I just didn't want to have to keep going through lengthy RMAs everytime a failure, so I decided to go for the crucial c300. I perhaps should have done some research on my SATA3 controller, as that's pants, and proper holding back my c300.

The Corsairs have probably the highest failure rate of any SSD out there at the moment.

they're both identical in performance etc so i would just go for the cheapest (currently the vertex 2e). both have similar failure rates (corsair perhaps slightly higher on reading around) so i would just go on price (i've got a corsair in my lappy and in my desktop at work and its fantastic, power to windows in under 20 seconds)

Not a very good premise to buy an SSD on... it is very slightly less likely to fail... would go for the crucial if I was you.

If it's just a boot drive then get the crucial - lowest risk in terms of fail and just as quick at booting up.

Cheers for the replies everyone! Especially for flagging up the Vertex on Today's Special... have snapped one up at that price. Looking forward to trying it out on Thursday.

Now I just need to remember and start downloading the latest versions of all the drivers I need, urgh what a pain!
