    Epic Hard Drive Failure

MY samsung F3 750gb Has just suffered what i can only describe as an epic FAIL.

Noticed last weekend pc was loading up very slow then a few days ago it came up windows needs to check drive E:GAMES and it had 4 bad sectors then today it did the same so i skipped it and went into windows and ran hd tune twice here are the results.

It's only about 5 months old never been dropped knocked or anything this is my second samsung drive to suffer a massive fail. HD tune wont even complete a full run through.

Do you think scan will take this back under RMA

easier to go direct that mess about waiting for scan. yeh you will have to pay postage but it gets the job done a week or 2 faster.

you may be able to do a advanced rma if you need it in a hurry

    Re: Epic Hard Drive Failure

my last samsung drive scan turned aroun d in 6 days from me sending to getting it back they were pretty superb. Luckily it's only my games drive not OS so can live without for a few days. And being that this is my second samsung to die in 6 months i doubt i'll put it back in go back to a more reliable brand.

My steam drive is a WD and i had about 7 of various sizes previously that never failed, And then when i wanted a 1tb i read all the stuff around here and other places saying WD were unreliable these days and samsung were super reliable so switched to samsung two hard drives down in 6 months am sticking with what i like from now on

LoL it did 5 minutes after i took that screenshot it became no longer accessible full stop windows wanted to reformat it but couldn't then when opened case could feel and hear the heads bouncing in the drive.

And while a hardware failure is never fun i think this is hilarious at least i got to see how bad it was before it died usually you just don't know. so am laughing instead of crying at the fact i cant uninstall any of the games cos the drive doesn't exist so my OS has loads of games installed that it cant find and wont remove so when i replace it will have fun getting games to reinstall,

    Re: Epic Hard Drive Failure

Well it does put me off buying a Samsung drive, think when I pick up another pair of 1TB drives I'll stick to Western Digital.

That said it's a gamble whichever brand you go for.

I've had two F3s do exactly the same (1TB though).
This one appears to be ok, but something funny is going on at Samsung right now..

Hmm - but WD drives fail too! I had one fail within 3 weeks of installation. Fortunately it was part of a RAID1 array so nothing lost.

Part of the problem (I suspect) is inadequate packaging by some e-tailers (although SCAN tends to be excellent in that respect.) so the drive sustains damage in transit.

One thing I have noticed is that the Samsung in the array runs about 10 degrees cooler (using the SMART data) than the WD mounted next to it, suggesting the Samsung takes less power.

Basically I don't think there is much to choose between any of the consumer grade devices, whether it is WD, Samsung, Hitachi or Seagate.

And that's why when building RAID arrays it makes sense to mix and match vendors/models. Reduces your risk of a duff batch (which I'm pretty certain has happened with all vendors) taking your data with it.

    Re: Epic Hard Drive Failure

Next hard drive I buy will be another WD. Maybe I have just been lucky (only ever bought 3 HDs 2 WD and 1 Seagate). But I have had 2 WDs an IDE one which lasted me for 7 years no problems still works probably lol and my current one which I have had for approaching around a year which I have dropped as well, perfectly quiet no problems so far despite the drop, touch wood. I see your point peterb that all manufacturers have ones that fail, but up until I get a dudd one from WD I am gonna stick with them because I think that is only fair. If you keep on buying hard drives from a manufacturer and they keep working why change? similarly if you buy one from a manufacturer and it's a dudd then surely it's time to change brand. You can only really go on your own experiences. I see your point totally but like I said if you buy 2 hard drives a samsung and a WD and the samsung breaks then why replace it with another samsung you'd replace it will a WD that is the only rational thing to do.

    Re: Epic Hard Drive Failure

I don't think there's a single brand of hard drive that I've not seen dead.
However I've seen fewer dead Samsung and WD vs a stack of Seagate & Hitachi
How again age and model comes into play, the Hitachi PATA 2.5" drives where very bad but the Sata ones have been far better
Fujitsu used to make excellent hard drives but that was many years ago, not sure they even still make hard drives.
Think your self lucky it failed 5 months in and not 5 months after the warranty ran out
    I'd RMA with Scan.

You say this is the 2nd that failed? is it the RMA replacement that's died? if so I'd ask if you can get a different drive in exchange.

Part of the problem is often bad handling, as peterb said, however it can happen long before it get to the retailer, all this stuff tends to come from Asia and there's a lot of steps in the chain where stuff can get damaged before it meets Scan's obsession with bubble wrap.

I always thought that decreased performance and could ultimately lead to extra stress on some/all of the drives in the array due to different physical drive characteristics and spindle syncing?

    Re: Epic Hard Drive Failure

i hope Samsung drives are not really really bad atm... i have 8 of them running in various flavors around the flat!

All RAID'd though so it wouldnt be too bad, dread to think how long the RAID5 with 4 x 2tb drives would take to rebuild though :/
