2.3 inch SSD - standard SATA?

    Hi there,

Was just wondering - most the SSDs I've seen are in 2.5 inch format. Do these have standard SATA connections like 3.5 inch drives? ie other than needing an adapter to physically secure it into a desktop case, can you use standard SATA cables for the MoBo and PSU, or is it some sort of laptop-esque SATA that needs an adapter?

    Cheers!

EDIT; I meant 2.5 inch!! can't edit the title....damn, going to look REALLY silly now.......

Yep standard power and data cables. No need for a case adaptor if you get one with 2.5" bays either

(Thus I have a spare adaptor if you need one mate).

Actually there are a couple with different connectors just to be annoying, but most have standard sata connections and you can get an adaptor if it's not.

Re: 2.3 inch SSD - standard SATA?

SATA nearly all 2.5" & 3.5" and some 1.8" have the standard connector you're used to and are wholly interchangeable. = WIN

PATA was different, there was a small form factor connection which required an adapter for 2.5" drives and 1.8" were all over the place.

Re: 2.3 inch SSD - standard SATA?

Some can use this format, it's also the same as used on some slimline dvd/cd drives

That's the adaptor, you can see the data connector is still the same but the power connector is far smaller, it also uses 5v only

However it is fairly rare, there is one model from Mushkin that uses it that I know of.

    Cool, thanks for the info!

Will be sticking to good old fashioned motorised rotation devices for the time being.....but in the future......I'm generally a generation behind everyone else coz I'm tight!

Re: 2.3 inch SSD - standard SATA?

2.5" SATA hard drives are the same as their SSD counterparts. They have standard SATA data and power connectors, that was a consideration of the SATA spec to start with. You are now getting drives that want smaller connectors, so you do get them, but they aren't that common.
