If you're going to do AHCI (and you really should have AHCI running, whatever kind of drive you're running) you need to start all over again.
Personally, I would wait until you need to do a reinstall of windows for another reason - it's not a good enough reason on its own.
As for tweaks and all the rest of it, don't bother, it's a load of nonsense. Windows 7 will do everything fine with SSDs without any mucking about.
Re: Just got an SSD, anything I should know?
yeah. TBH all i use it for is booting windows and loading games and it does that fine. I used the highly advanced method of double sided tape to mount it to my f3 drive :P

Have to agree with all of that! Windows 7 did everything right when I did a fresh install on the drive.

Didn't it come with the pressed steel bracket?
Re: Just got an SSD, anything I should know?
yeah but with my case you have to use the proprietary drive cages and it just doesn't fit :)

Ah yes, the hybrid approach. I like to think that I pioneered a trend there :p
Re: Just got an SSD, anything I should know?
It's actually super easy to get AHCI mode running, you go into regedit and look for this "folder":
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
->SYSTEM
-->CurrentControlSet
--->Services
---->msahci
Right click the entry named "Start" in the Name column and click Modify. In the Value data box type "0", click OK and restart your computer. When you are restarting make sure you go into BIOS and change the SATA controller to AHCI. Once you save the BIOS settings and reboot, you'll go into Windows 7 and it'll automatically install the AHCI drivers for your SATA controller automatically and ask you to restart. Simple.
Re: Just got an SSD, anything I should know?
So I won't need a reinstall?

Nope you won't. Doesn't take much more than a min or two either I'd imagine.
You may want to backup your regedit just incase something goes wrong though.
Do post the AS SSD benchmark again with AHCI enabled though as I'd like to see the difference!
Re: Just got an SSD, anything I should know?
Well that's gone wrong. I changed it from IDE to AHCI in bios and also I changed it from 3 to 0 in regedit and it says AHCI init and then blue screen and now startup repair...
Re: Just got an SSD, anything I should know?
THe worrying thing is that I can hear the spindle drive being accessed, specifically my old maxtor 200gb. Why is this?
Re: Just got an SSD, anything I should know?
You did change the regedit entry first before changing the BIOS right? The point you make about your Maxtor drive is a bit odd as changing it over to AHCI mode shouldn't affect your drive boot orders.
Re: Just got an SSD, anything I should know?
Yup I did that first. Seeing if I can revert now.
Re: Just got an SSD, anything I should know?
Right I'm back in, merely by changing back to ide in the sata mode. Although curiously I managed to get back in with it still set to 0 in regedit.
Re: Just got an SSD, anything I should know?
That's quite odd, I've reread my instructions and I've not missed anything out and seems you haven't missed anything out either. It's odd that it's running IDE with it set to 0 though, I remember that when I changed it to 0 I'd get a BSOD on loading Windows 7 if it was set to IDE mode and not AHCI mode.
Guess you'll have to wait until your next Windows 7 re-installation then to active AHCI mode.
Re: Just got an SSD, anything I should know?
Yup, might do it fairly soon seeing as I'm early in now so wouldn't be much to lose. Can I keep all the games I've downloaded from steam on another drive and then transfer them over afterwards to save time?
Re: Just got an SSD, anything I should know?
Yup, I just copied my whole folder to my WD drive and the first time you launch Steam again after moving it, it'll "update" everything automatically.
