Feel free to gloat:) but why my hard drive not recognised when plugged to SATA 3.

I'm sure many of you will have heard by now about the debacle of the Sandy Bridge motherboards with the faulty SATA 2 components. Apparently they fail over time.

The temporary solution is to use the SATA 3 connectors on the motherboard, my hard drive is Samsung's pinpoint F3, when I plug it in to the SATA 3 port it's not recognised as even been attached. I been fiddling the BIOS, but with no luck.

Samsung F3's often need a firmware update - when I plugged mine into the SATA 3 ports they made a god awful mechanical clanking - check samsungs site for a firmware update to fix it..

thanks for the link. You have definitely hit the nail on the head, but there are two things that concern me, the total lack of instructions about how to do the firmware flash, not insurmountable but bit of a pain.

The thing that is worrying me slightly is that I was reading on another forum, where someone did this upgrade to the firmware, and the drive with no longer recognisable in the SATA 2 port, (which caused him a slight heart attack) but worked fine in the SATA3.

I need to get this corroborated, but it seems that after the firmware flash, the hard drive will not be recognisable in a SATA two port any more but only in the SATA-3.

I hadn't heard that - as for instructions it's done via a bootable DOS jobby - I used a flash stick to do mine and all you do is run the exe. I've not retried them on SATA2 ports but I'd be surprised if that were true.

Re: Feel free to gloat:) but why my hard drive not recognised when plugged to SATA 3.

Here is where i Read about Sata 2 not working after flashing .

    http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/sh....php?t=3052175

"Information for all samsung F3 users out there who like me, are using it on the SATA II ports for AMD SB850 chipsets.

I've been having this drive for 8 months and have been running it on my Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H in SATA II mode 'cos the drive can never be detected when plugged into the SATA 3.0 ports.

Today, I decided to do some exploration and to my surprise, there is a firmware update for this drive.
    From the official site:
    Quote:

This patch code is released in order to solve the compatibility problem between SB850 chipset and F3 + F3EG model.
This patch program works only to
    F3 (HD323HJ / HD502HJ / HD503HI / HD103SJ / HD105SI)
    F3EG (HD153WI / HD203WI)

    [F/W Patch Procedure]
    1. Please unzip attached file to Bootable media (USB,CD, Floppy...etc).
    2. Please connect Target HDD to Primary / Mast.
    3. Booting the system to DOS mode by bootable media.(which with this F/W flash program).
    4. Please run " Patch ".
    5. When FW Flash successfully message display , please Power Off system, to make F/W flash complete.

Note: Backup your data in case the HDD fails. Flashing process almost gave me a heart attack as the drive was not detected on the SATA II ports after flashing. You have to move it to the SATA 3.0 port and it will be accessible.

My win 7 also updated some stuff (most likely the drivers) after I booted the first time. A 2nd reboot and everything seems normal now.

Just wanted to share this info with bros out there who do not know about it! "
