How difficult is it to buy an internal hard drive? SCAN

Hi there, this is all new to me however my past experience with SCAN Computers has driven me here. SO to answer my own question…….Extremely!!! I am now on my third hard drive sent out from Scan Computers. All I wanted was an additional drive for storage. I ordered a Western Digital 1 Tb Sata2 WD10EARS 5400rpm from them back in 27 January 2011. As yet, Scan still hasn’t managed to supply a working hard drive. After the second failing, I did ask to change the brand as I had on confidence with WD. And as far as I know, returned the second one back to me (going on the turn around after the first one). Is this common practise with this company? They were recommended to me, yet this is driving me nuts! Has anybody else had the some experience with these drives or company?

It does happen, yes. Scan are better than most because they package the hard drives pretty well which protects them from damage.

There's always a risk of receiving a bad hard drive, looks like you've had some pretty bad luck to receive these in a row.

Re: How difficult is it to buy an internal hard drive? SCAN

sounds like it might be a batch issue and you have been unfortunate enough to receive a number of drives from the same problematic batch.

I can understand your frustration in the matter but i can assure you the issue would not be any better with another company. As Snooty mentioned, scan package their hard drives very well so the damage is unlikely to be their fault and is more likely to be WDs. Scan have agreed to replace these drives without too much questioning (right?) so that should give them some level of respect whereas other companies may not be quite so willing. In essence, dont shoot the messenger, scan are still providing you with a good service as far as i can tell!

Re: How difficult is it to buy an internal hard drive? SCAN

It's common practise to replace the drive and issue a replacement once the drive(s) have been tested, which IMHO takes a little bit too long. That said, they've always got there, albeit with a couple of goes.

I found I got better results by ringing them and speaking to them rather than filling in the web form for an RMA. They even tested my motherboard before despatching it this time... (note to self... test that motherboard!)

Stick with it... they normally sell good stuff and a good price. I've had to return a couple of things under warranty (I buy a LOT of stuff for a home user, from them) and they've been great. It's just been frustrating having to wait, but I'd sooner that they did due diligence...

Re: How difficult is it to buy an internal hard drive? SCAN

I've had several hard drives from Scan, including the last couple, which were both WD drives. So far, not a single failure .... which is more than I can say for motherboards.

This thread is, however, in the wrong place, so I'll move it so somewhere more appropriate.

Re: How difficult is it to buy an internal hard drive? SCAN

No offence but if you are looking for someone to slag scan off I doubt you will find them on these boards. I think the problem is you have only dealt with scan so you don't know how crap some of "companies" can be. As far as I can tell they have reissued you with mutliple new drives with little or no quesitons. You have just been unlucky I am afraid.

I know hearing that probably doesn't make you feel that much better but you just have to be patient.
