I agree with you on all of that, but I did personally disable hibernation - purely because I needed the several gigs that the hibernation file takes up on my 32GB SSD.

I only do those things to lessen the writes to the drive and hence increase the lifespan.
These things also keep up the free space, which in turn keeps up the performance.
There are pages and pages of things other people do, but I agree they are relatively pointless and in some cases actually lead to degraded performance.
I found this guide to be good when setting up an SSD correctly. My 80GB Intel X25-M runs like a dream with it.

Well my Corsair F80 has served me well, was thinking of getting the smaller drive initially too but went with 80Gb a few months back, hurt the pockets a bit but I'm happy I did!
