but, but, but I neeeeed one, ok I don't, I have one in my basket right now & am trying to think of a use for it, that obviously means I shouldn't buy it
damn you common sense.

I'll buy an SSD .... when (and if) the price/GB drops to a point I find acceptable. My guess is it'll probably happen eventually, and these things have a habit of happening faster than I expect. I said I wouldn't buy a Kindle/e-reader until one with the spec I wanted was sub-£100, and caved in at £109. Much the same logic applies to SSDs. At, say £40, it's an impulse thing for me, regardless of value for money. But at £80-£100, it isn't. My cut-off point is somewhere in there. It's all about what I want and what I'm prepared to pay for it, as it is for all of us. For instance, not that long ago, I paid over £500 for a flash(gun) for my camera, and I'm sure that's a decision a lot of people would regards as stark-raving nuts. The £300 I spent on a hardware printer/monitor colour calibration system would be OTT for most people too, I'm sure. A LOT of people on this forum could afford either, or both, but how many would? You would not EVER catch me paying that £500 (in real terms) for a mobile phone, yet a lot of people jump on the iPhone with gusto.
I would like an SSD, but not enough to pay £100 for one, which means anything I do buy (brand new) is going to be pretty small, and essentially just a boot drive. I'd rather put that towards upgrading my macro lens, or something similar.
Don't be too surprised if you see me buying an SSD .... but it'll be when (and if) the deal is right. On the other hand, if you see be buying a smartphone of any type, it'll either be because prices have dropped a LOT, or I'm absolutely convinced the apocalypse is nigh alright .... or I can be fitted for a straightjacket.

I installed Windows on my 128GB Crucial M4 today.
Doesn't seem brilliant to be honest. I put it in the Intel Sata3 slot and turned on ACHI. Windows installed in about 20 minutes.
What did you expect installation in three minutes flat??
A slower Crucial C300 128GB takes 444 seconds from a flash drive to install Windows 7:

http://www.overclock.net/ssd/859715-...single-vs.html
The Crucial C300 128GB has 20% lower write speeds than the M4 128GB.
This time is consistent with other reviews in which a flash drive or high speed optical media is used to install windows. You are looking at 7 to 8 minutes:
http://www.hardwareheaven.com/review...all-times.html
The higher capacity drives in the review have higher write speeds and still the M4 256GB which is only supposed to have 260MB/second write speeds and not the 500MB/second ability of the Vertex 3 takes the same time. This is becuase the data transfer rate of the flash stick or optical drive and other general I/O overheads are limitations.
If you are installing Windows using a DVD drive, you are looking at a maximum read rate off a 24X drive with 24X media of 32MB/second. It is most likely a Windows DVD is not 24X so you are looking at less then this. If it is a 16X DVD you are looking at around 21MB/second. If it is 8X you are looking at around 11MB/second. The disc drive is a bottleneck.
Edit!!
Looking at a user review on Amazon, one user of the M4 128GB said it took 12 minutes to install Windows 7 off a DVD drive:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/product-reviews/B004W2JKZI
This seems consistent with what I mentioned earlier.
Of course being Windows 7 installation times can vary greatly dependent on the components in the system.

On an old Intel X25-M 160GB, it took less than 10 minutes to install Windows 7 from a USB key.
I suspect the DVD is the bottleneck![]()

Can you quote the line as I can't find it myself!
EDIT:
Crucial M4 Firmware 0009 is a really good update, need to flash mine! check it out here

I'm not basing it just on the Windows installation.
It just generally doesn't seem amazingly fast. It is reasonable. But almost definitely not worth the premium paid.
