Re: Need new SATA ports for old pc?
how do i see if the card shows up on ubuntu ? i only tried to see if it can detect my hdd using fdisk -l
It did not show up but when i connected my hdd into the motherboards sata it detected it fine :(
soz i couldnt reply last night as BT cocked up on by phone line
Re: Need new SATA ports for old pc?
HWINFO should give you all the info you need, and can be installed from your package manager if not already installed. Try
hwinfo --storage-ctrl
should show you the storage controllers installed on your machine.
Re: Need new SATA ports for old pc?
Ok cool i will try that later. right now BT screwed up my landline and my phone number is being used buy some random old lady :(
net is screwed for me man but thats all in another thread you can search for in general section of hexus.
edit: tried to insall that hwinfo just now and this is the error im getting:

Re: Need new SATA ports for old pc?
Check with "lspci" to see if the hardware has been detected.
Check with "lsmod" to see if the driver (sata_sil, i think) has been loaded.
Re: Need new SATA ports for old pc?
Josh, you're getting that error because Ubuntu can't resolve the hostname to download the package from. Presumably because your Internet is down.
Re: Need new SATA ports for old pc?
Yea think so. will take a look later. some BT is in my house fixing my internet apparantly

I'm not a linux expert, however

That looks like it.
So it does seem to have found it.
Re: Need new SATA ports for old pc?
Normally I'd agree, but the card that Josh linked to uses the Sil3124 chipset, so something odd is going on.
Output of lsmod?

Re: Need new SATA ports for old pc?
Hmm... I think this card needs sata_sil24 as well as sata_sil
What does
modprobe -l | grep sata_sil24
return?
Re: Need new SATA ports for old pc?
it returns this:
root@joshserver:~# modprobe -l | grep sata_sil24
kernel/drivers/ata/sata_sil24.ko
if its any help. last night ubuntu said there was a new update on the OS so i updated it. running this version:
Welcome to Ubuntu 11.04 (GNU/Linux 2.6.38-11-generic i686)
Re: Need new SATA ports for old pc?
ok, so the drivers are present in the kernel as expected. You still can't see the drives?
Re: Need new SATA ports for old pc?
Ubuntu has some pretty nifty features, It might not pick it up first time, but it should install drivers itself, not a bad idea, but wouldn't it be easier to upgrade to a decent INTEL mobo that has around 8 ports itself,...
Re: Need new SATA ports for old pc?
....or buy an SATA card with official support from a forum member.
Re: Need new SATA ports for old pc?
What mobo had 8 ports without costing an arm and a leg. Sa for a.sata. anyways I will try my current sata port.
