Need new SATA ports for old pc?

Hi. i current have a old pentium 4 northwood computer that i use as a server running ubuntu server edition and was wondering the ubuntu server would automatically detect this http://www.scan.co.uk/products/lycom...%28non-raid%29 so i can add more sata hdd's in my server pc. currently it only has two SATA ports on the mobo and im looking to install lots more HDD'S on it and i want the ubuntu server to automatically see them using the above PCI card.

Will it work? Do i need to install drivers for it? how do you install the drivers for it ona ubuntu server edition machine?

It's not certified in the HCL (the card) but I see no reason why it wouldn't work - it's hardly elaborate stuff. I've personally used the Silicon Image stuff in the past purely for ports (never for RAID) under Ubuntu and they've always worked.

silicon stuff? got any links to alternative pci sata port adapters? did you have to install any drivers for it

I seem to recall that I used these and while it was some time ago they did the job. As for drivers, I'm pretty certain that they just worked (obviously they'll require drivers, but the ones used were those built into the OS). So long as your kernel is 2.4.18-14 or higher you should be fine. Think the card I used was an Sil3114.

the card you suggest has an evil chipset for Linux,


if you want to use a card try to keep to main big brands that are known to be Linux friendly, Adaptect, 3ware etc.

They may cost a little more, but they work and work well, as opposed to either fighting to get something working with a dirty hack, or accepting that hardware is totally unsupportable/usable in Linux and wasting your money.

Cheers all. i will get a known branded sata port card. should work without installing any additonal drivers innit. dont really need raid features

The silicon image stuff seems to be supported well. Look for them on ebay, I recently picked up a brand new PCI-E SATA card from a chinese seller for 0.99usd + a few quid postage....and I dredged through a lot of PCI cards when looking for the PCI-E one I needed.

There are quite a few floating around for around 3quid or less...new

As I said, the Sil3114 chipset worked fine *purely for providing extra slots*. Josh isn't looking for a RAID card (and I'll be the first to admit that they're cack as RAID cards), and it's a very low end box so I suspect that throwing £50-150 at a RAID card when he's already happy with software raid isn't really an option. Support is baked into the kernel, so shouldn't require either fighting or dirty hacks.

What version of Ubuntu server are you running? Also exactly which card are you using?

I never tried the 3124, but I see no reason why it shouldn't just show up. Did you disable the card's onboard RAID functionality in it's BIOS? When you say it doesn't work, does the card not show up within Ubuntu at all? Or is it not working in some other way?
