SATA 3 compatible with SATA 1 and 2?

Hi im looking to get a new HDD but scan seem low in stock with various sata 2 hdd's as most that are in stock are blooming green ones i.e slow 5600rpm ones

i was browsing the sata 3 models and found more instock and more selections in particular this one http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1tb-s...cache-85ms-ncq

my question is can sata 3 hdd's work on my asus P6T Delux x58 mobo which is sata 2 and i also have some pentium 4 northwood pc which is sata 1.

I will be using this hdd on both machines and was wondering if it will work.

    cheers in advance

Re: SATA 3 compatible with SATA 1 and 2?

While they all should be fully backwards compatible, I know some have had issues.

On the sata1 pc, it's really not worth it unless you absolutely need a new drive or more space, sata1 was pants, while theoretically 1.5Gbit/s it had rather large overheads which made it no faster than IDE, with actual speeds of around 1.2Gbit/s
The last commonly found version of IDE was Ultra ATA 6 was 133Gbit/s, after overheads was just over 1.2Gbit/s

try phoning scan up and asking about when they think they'll get some more samsung F3's in http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1tb-s...cache-89ms-ncq
