I've aquired the hot swap bay with sata backplane from a supermicro server http://www.supermicro.com/products/c...SC742T-550.cfm
complete with four 80gb Western Digital Caviar SE WD800JD drives
This is the backplane btw
Now I'm thinking of modding this into a case atm, and possibly keeping the drives in a raid 5 array as a primary OS drive+non gaming software, I've got a 500gb and a 1tb drive (both samsung) which I'll use for storage and probably games.
Now I could plug that lot into into my motherboard, however
1 - I'm a bit unsure about using some on raid and some not all on the same controller
2 - lack of led's
Each removable caddy has it's own activity led, well the led's are actually on the backplane and each caddy has a perspex rod in it so the light shines out of the front.
Each of these led's is controlled via a pair of pins, however motherboards only has one pair of pins for hdd activity.
So what I'm thinking of is getting a 4port sata raid card that can do raid 5 and has led multiple output pins, with the two storage drives just run off the motherboard.
after some looking about this card seems to tick all the boxes http://www.scan.co.uk/products/highp...-oem-card-only however I've little idea in terms of what to look for in sata controller chips, so I've no idea if it's good or not and at £65 it's rather expensive for my pocket.
Any help would be welcome esp in terms of cheaper options I'm open to 2nd hand suggestions but I just don't know what to look for.
EDIT:I've seen some cheap ones on fleabay but they are pci and seem to be sata 1.5gbit/s and don't have led output pins
