Now, we'll wait until some bod on YouTube takes one apart and shows us how to make a proper laser gun!
Laser turntable FTW:

Instead of the clicking will it go PEW PEW PEW? if so. i want one.
"Introduced in 2011" WTF?!?!?
I saw this being demo'ed on Tomorrow's World!! I think it uses a bunch of lasers for different things. Two for reading the groove, two to keep the first two in the groove, and then another to keep the whole lot focused at the right hight in case the record is warped and the focus point needs to move up and down.
It's an amazing idea
edit ah ok, the "standard" model was indeed introduced in 1989, the new high end one was introduced this year. Looks lovely if you ask me.
I remember seeing it as well, had to be ~20 years ago! They played an original press of Bing Crosbys White Christmas.....and it sounded really good even though the record was badly warped and worn.
Over the years I have mentioned it to many people but most think I imagined it
As for the HDDs.....MAYBE if they could make a multi-platter version which essentially splits data between platters and heads/lasers (a la raid) and does not use the inner circle of the drive, then I may be interested....but otherwise it's all about the SSDs for me..

That's a step forward in hard drive, and hopefully the price per GB is similar to what we have now or cheaper, then HDD has a even better position vs SSD (for those who wants cheap storage solution)
