I just fitted a 256Gb M4 to my Toshiba laptop. It is SO much faster than hard disk even though the Tosh only supports SATA 2 and not SATA 3. You will need to make sure you align the drive when you partition or you will not get a decent speed out of it.

Many thanks, going to order the drive asap (tomorrow at the latest) and will look into how to align the drive correctly using diskman in Windows

Don't know if you can do it in windows. It is really easy with gparted, just ensure it is set to align to MiB and not cylinder in the drop down box and set the partition to start at 1Mb not 0Mb (which is the default). basically you have to throw away 1Mb, no big deal.

You can also use Paragon Partition Manager to set the partition to start at 1 instead of 0; I just happen to have used gparted.

Ordered the M4.... not sure if it was a good idea, but the extra speed should come in handy, and I'd be kicking myself if my VMs needed more than 96GB, which invariably at some point they will!

Okay, it came yesterday, and I've got it all setup with my new PSU now - damn, what a difference! 5 VMs running simultaneously without even a hint of slowdown. Thank you all so much for the recommendation.

One problem though, is that it won't fit anywhere in my case, for now I've just put it on a small piece of cloth and lay it down on a drive bay, is this okay?

    Thanks!

You could always try sticky back velcro; you can then put it anywhere you want.

Re: Good SSD for virtual machines?

That's actually a great suggestion, thank you! It's really light, so that's a perfect solution
