    Anyone use a VelociRaptor?

As above. I have a 120 GB SSD and I love it to bits. However I need more main space for programs and games etc.

I can see you can pick these up for £120 now for the 300GB 10k version. Anyone we used one? A better choice than SSD considering the money? I know it won't be as fast but seems like a good deal.

Edit : would love to hear about the noise of these in particular.

I have a 150GB & used to be first in to servers before SSD's came out, have a 5 year warranty as well.

Not the 300gb, no, but I've got 2 of the 150gb Raptors in RAID0. TBH, I was perfectly happy with the performance of them on their own, without an SSD.

I've now set it up so I've got an SSD as the boot drive, and then the RAID0 raptors for all installed programs, then a single WD 320gb for temporary storage. Works perfectly imho

    i ditched the 150gb raptors for a decent samsung f3 (i think) 2tb drive.

    perfect for storage.

Its more for games and programs so speed is key.

    Dave, how was the noise?

I've never found it to be an issue, though I've had sound deadening in both the cases they have been used in.

Latest one here (direct link to the sound deadening I installed): http://forums.hexus.net/pc-hardware/...ml#post2362093

If speed is key then ssd is the only choice.

The raptor is a good half way house if you need more capacity but in terms of performance the raptor dies compared to a modern ssd (and is noisy runs hot and uses lots of electricity).

Had the 300GB Velociraptor then switched to SSD, and the raptor is now in another rig as it is way too slow now, Storage is now F3 2TB, For the price they cost, there just not worth it over conventional drives to be honest with ya.

Have the Rapter 300GB as a data drive and a ssd for os, have no issues with sound levels.
