Any point in RAID 0 setup or SSD caching?

I'm currently looking for the best method to configure my system storage with Samsung 830 256GB and Seagate Barracuda 2TB ST2000DM001 7200rpm 64MB Cache.

From what I've gleaned from google, RAID 0 doubles the risk of failure but is amazingly fast. Not sure if you have to use 2 of the same drive to be able to do it.

And SSD caching is pointless if you just run programs from the SSD.

So with that in mind, is it best to just leave my SSD as my OS boot and programs and the HDD just for data?

Personally, I can't see any reason for RAID 0 in a home set up. The spped increase in most cases is notional in real life, and he risk of data loss is higher - unless you are backing up regularly.

And as SSD's are faster than hard drives anyway, the limiting factor will be the rest of the system.

Raid 0 increases speed but has no redundancy for your data, there are other Raid variants that can offer both performance and redundancy but you would need 3 or more drives (preferably the same ).

Running your OS on the SSD will give you speedy boots, putting the apps and games on a mech hdd will see no fast boots from them but when you have to reinstall the OS you don't have to install all your apps and games all over again.

Honestly I don't care waiting a few extra seconds for games to load and there is no impact on gaming performance while you are actually playing.

Personally, I disagree - I've run mechanical RAID 0 for years and I've augmented in more recent times with SSDs in RAID 0 too. Can I tell the difference? oh yeah And please explain why anyone shouldn't be backing up regardless!
Ironically, the fails i've had in the past ~10 years are two SSDs and three HDDs all configured as standalone drives. Such is life. And chance..

The best answer is to try it for yourself and see if it makes any difference to your use case - RAID 0 can be appealing (after all you don't lose capacity) so long as you're comfortable with the increased risks and takes measures to negate them. All my systems automatically back themselves up.

Re: Any point in RAID 0 setup or SSD caching?

I run 2x M4 128Gb SSD's in Raid 0 as my main OS drive and to be honest I don't think I can tell the difference in speed between the raid & a standard setup.

I'm seriously considering going back to a single disk SSD setup, although when I do then I'll probably notice the difference!!

it actually depends on your controller - the marvell 9128 is limited to 380 mb/s or so as its internally limited to pcie 1x anyway

Good point, i'm using the intel 3G ports myself which are fine for the job.

Re: Any point in RAID 0 setup or SSD caching?

Sometimes it is not even about being able to tell the difference, sometimes it is about knowing the difference.

I have 2x 128GB Samsung 830 SSD's in RAID-0 and with read speeds over 1000mb/s and write well over 600 I am sure that in quite a few situations I benefit, I wonder.... if you spent 20 years on a PC and looked back and calculated every single milli second you spent looking at your screen while it was loading, I bet you could see a difference there lol

I dno who knows I just like extreme speed, and with my quality ssd's in raid-0 I feel quite happy about that, I use them for OS and games and apps.

For basic storage I just have a nice 1TB Samsung F1 to keep all my po.... urm, other stuff.

Re: Any point in RAID 0 setup or SSD caching?

so basically RAID 0 only if I buy another SSD?

would be interesting to see the difference cos there are still instances where I feel my computer should be faster e.g. shut down

Re: Any point in RAID 0 setup or SSD caching?

When I set up this current rig I had two HDDs in RAID 0 which was not particularly fast, a newer more capable drive like a WD Caviar Black would have beaten the RAID setup I had, however I had the drives and it was cheaper to use my SATA 2 drives than buying a shiny new SATA 3 drive.

In January I bought an OCZ 128gb Synapse drive and then more recently after a reinstall of my OS I removed one of the two HDDs so I have a single 1tb being cached through my Synapse drive. I can see in Windows Event Viewer that my boot up times are regularly lower than 45 seconds and often under 35 seconds, with games like MW3 I am usually one of the first to enter a map after having played a few rounds, however as it's hot data that is cached if my first round is after not having played the game for some time then I find that I only gain the speed advantage when returning to that map a second or sometimes third time. But I like the cached option as I am currently using more than 400gb on a 1tb drive and I can't really afford to get 500gb or more in SSD drives at the moment. This is something I'd like to have eventually though.

Isn't that how the 256gb drive would be arranged internally?
