    Samsung 830 256gb or OCZ Vertex 4 256GB?

Thinking of getting one of these, so I can take my 128GB M4 out of my main PC and put it in another one.
Both these drives look faster than my M4 & Vertex looks to be the best of the 2, but the Samsung is about £150 + an additional £20 rebate, whereas the Vertex is £170.
Would you opt for the 830 safe in the knowledge that the Vertex isn't £40 better, or would you go for the Vertex as it seems to perform better in real world tests?

Samsung 830 by a mile, OCZ have screwed up too many times with SSDs.

The Samsung is my 1st choice of SSD anyway. Samsung memory is everywhere. Even though the OCZ is faster on paper it wont show in real world usage.

the vertex 4 is so far rounding out to be quite reasonable - it uses a marvell controller rebranded.

my own choice would be the samsung - especially as they have a cashback offer atm

    Re: Samsung 830 256gb or OCZ Vertex 4 256GB?

Samsung IMO. No-one can come close to Samsung for reliability (even Intel).

The speed difference between the samsung and OCZ is next to nothing. Plus the OCZ might outperform on out-and-out speed, but this doesnt always convert to real life speeds (it may do though). The samsung is well documented to provide solid all-round performance.

The only other SSD (at this price point) I would recommend is the M4, but you say you already have one of these. So I'd go with the samsung (I did... the 128GB anyway)

    Re: Samsung 830 256gb or OCZ Vertex 4 256GB?

I've just found myself with the same decision. I had a Vertex 3 before but it caused too many problems to keep. Thankfully I'm forgiving and the Vertex 4 seems like a completely different beast from what I've read, but if you don't want to risk a failure for the extra performance then go with the 830. Pretty much the only bad thing I've heard about the Samsung is the supplied Norton Ghost has issues, but that shouldn't really be counted against the drive itself.
Scan currently have the 256GB 830 a couple of pounds cheaper than usual over this weekend, and of course the £20 cash back is nice even if you have to mess around claiming it.

    when you actually move away from benchmarks - or you look at `rela world` testing , then all the drives perform in a similar way;;

Watch with the Samsung. I bought one expecting a rebate but it turns out its the wrong model number...

Apart from the price, the Samsung is great being noticeably faster than my previous Corsair SSD.

Apparently not. I bought it from Amazon so OK there. However the model number doesn't match that which Samsung say that the offer is limited to so that's that. When you can apply for the cashback I'll try anyway and see what happens.

it seems (from other forums) samsung are only offering cash back on officaily imported drives - anything imported other than by samsung isnt being accepted

    Re: Samsung 830 256gb or OCZ Vertex 4 256GB?

For anyone thinking of buying a Samsung SSD here are the model numbers lifted straight from the site.

Claim £50/€50 cashback on the following SSD models:

    MZ-7PC512B/WW, MZ-7PC512D/EU, MZ-7PC512N/EU

Claim £20/€20 cashback on the following SSD models:

    MZ-7PC256B/WW, MZ-7PC256D/EU, MZ-7PC256N/EU

Qualifying SSD purchases must be made between 15/08/2012 and 30/09/2012

Make sure you read the other conditions as well because you can only apply between 30 and 45 days after purchase.
I'm emailing Samsung to see if this means working days or a 7 day week.
Of course I'm perfect you just need to lower your expectations.

Yup. The one I got from Amazon has a model ending in HAFU. Awesome.

Hi... did you get your Samsung in the end?

I went through the same a while back. But decided on the Vertex 4 (got a 128GB + 256GB) and pretty pleased up to now. As opposed to some, my experience with the earlier Vertex 1 /2 drives was good, so this swung it for me. Though quite aware that's not been everyone's experience!

Damn, wish I'd known about the cashback before I bought the 64GB one. Probably would have gone a bit bigger!
