In need of either 4TB external disk or 4TB disk and external caddy - USB2 or e-SATA

    Hi fellow Hexus fans!

I am in need of an external disk to backup my NAS, the actual NAS is much bigger than 4TB but I think the important stuff will be maybe just over 3TB. With this in mind I need an external backup solution with a bit of head room. I was thinking 2 x 3TB and split the backup but I was also thinking 1 x 4TB for now and then another 1 x 4TB at the datacenter at a later date

This is not a corp backup so please no snapshot advice, tape to fire safe / ironmountain advice I am just really lucky to have datacenter access for part of my network for home use.

I am wondering what 4TB external disk or what 4TB drive + external caddy should I go for? Links to my fanboy site... I mean Scan would be good as well

    Thanks dudes.

    ps

    actually after reading this..

Akasa used to make a god range of esata caddies (The Integrale range), but they seem to have moved away from those. Unless you have a controller/software setup that allows for sata hot swapping, you need to reboot when you want to use the esata drive.

You might find USB3 might be better if you can fit a USB3 card, or in a few months, Thunderbolt might be an option (Thunderbolt devices are a bit thin on the ground at the moment)

As for drives, 4TB are also rare, Hitachi is an option, and if you do buy online, nit withstanding this thing with Scan, I have yet to find a etailer that wraps up disk drives as well as Scan

scan have one of the hitachi 4tb drives at £154 on today only. that's the cheapest i've seen 4TB drives. i'm not sure if it's USB2 or USB3. obviously it will take from from now till xmas to backup over USB2 and you need a USB3 card to access quicker, which for the sake of about £15 might be worth it. but then once you've backed up once it's not so hard to keep updated so you can just leave the pc running for a couple of days whislst backing up
