    Best SSD for Boot Drive?

    Hi,

I'm in the middle of buying parts for a high end gaming rig and as the title suggests I'm looking for advice on what SSD to get to use as a boot drive.

Got about £2000 - £2500 to spend on it (preferably on the lower end of that) and want it to pull its weight for at least 4 years with no further upgrades needed. I'm using a single 23" 1920x1080 3D capable monitor but will potentially add 2 more in the near future. Not planning on doing any crazy overclocks at the moment but will likely dabble when the system starts to show its age. I also work in video production so may need to run CS6 every once in a while.

    Here's my planned rig:

    Case: NZXT Switch 810
Case Fans: 6 x NZXT FX-140LB (in addition to the 4 included with the case)
    Fan Controller: NZXT Sentry LX
    CPU: i7 3930k
CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X60 (In top of case with push pull set up)
Mobo: ASUS Rampage IV Formula/BF3 Edition
    GPU: 2 x KFA2 GeForce GTX 680 4GB
PSU: PCPower Cooling Silencer MKII 950W
RAM: (Still undecided probably will get 16GB of DDR3 1600 (4 x 4GB) - Ripjaws, HyperX or Dominator Platinums...)
    OS: Windows 7 64bit OEM

    Thanks!

Re: Best SSD for Boot Drive?

Thanks for the advice guys, I picked up the Samsung 830 120GB on a flash sale for £60.

Just had a thought, SSDs are 2.5" do I need a special mount to get it installed in my 810?

Re: Best SSD for Boot Drive?

re mount - it depends. my chassis had holes in the bottom of the 3.5" removable drive caddy brackets so i could mount 2.5" direct without converter plate. If you do need the converter they cost approx £5 but some SSD ship with them included.

Re: Best SSD for Boot Drive?

Sorry guys, slight typo. It was the 840 through a seller on Amazon. Don't think they are still on for that price though...

Though it's only £70 direct from Amazon and Pixmania were selling them for under £70 but have postage charges...

Get the Samsung green memory as its far better for overclocking!

I'm assuming that your going to scrap the 680's and go for the Titan?

    Get a seasonic made psu

Can't believe anyone needs 10 fans! Is noise not an issue at all? There are quiter ways to go about it.

Re: Best SSD for Boot Drive?

10 fans on low speed will be less noisy for a given total air flow than 4 fans of the same size on high speed. There's a balancing act. My case runs 3 fans plus the CPU fan and 2 on the GPU cooler. And you can't hear a thing - why? Cos I chose the fans to have low noise. Fan quality is also key

For that price, I assume that's the 840, not the 840 Pro? The basic 840 isn't that great a performer, and there's some question as to the longevity of its TLC flash too. If you're doing a lot of HD video editing & using it as a scratch disk, you might hammer it a bit.

you'd really have to go at it even to hammer the basic version on write longevity. Short of using it in a server you should be fine. But granted the Pro is another level and if you can afford it, def get that version.
