You could always turn off hibernation mode and save yourself around 5gbs.

I dont know if its the same for Win8 but in win7 open command prompt (cmd.exe) with admin rights and type powercfg -h off

Of course only do that if you don't use hibernation mode.

Is there a chance it could be an issue of sector alignment?

Try running the AS SSD benchmark and see what you get.
I've just run the benchmark and it all seems in order.

I suppose the next step is to do a fresh install. Incidentally I initially formatted the SSD with AOMEI Partition Assistant Home Edition 5.1.2 and chose the option that optimises SSD,s before cloning my drive. driver magician software seems to indicate all my settings are okay. I would say on average things are starting about 25% faster, but almost unnoticeable when opening programs.

Re: just bought a 64 GB Samsung 830 SSD, am I mad?

hi, just wondered, I'm having a little difficulty goog the best way to data erase data on my SSD For a fresh reinstall. If I just formatted will that harm the life of the drive,

How do I correctly erase data to ensure that trim is active. With a view to doing a reinstallation. Is deleting the contents of the drive through file explorer better than doing a quick format. Thanks

Just format it, the drive will be fine.

Re: just bought a 64 GB Samsung 830 SSD, am I mad?

If you want it "factory fresh" you would need to use a secure erase utility.

By the time Windows has installed all over it, it won't exactly be fresh any more so I would say "meh" and just fast format.

Actually, in my case I would use a Linux live cd and dd a megabyte of zeros over the first few sectors just to make sure Windows sees an empty disk, but then I don't trust Windows so I try and give it as few surprises as possible

Re: just bought a 64 GB Samsung 830 SSD, am I mad?

Do a fresh install. I used to have two 30gb of the original vertex drives in raid and they were faster than my m4 (based on windows performance score), and that was without trim. You could always raid two together!

What is your drive set as in your bios? Make sure it's set as AHCI and not IDE or sata.

I only have a 30Gb ssd with Win 7 Ultimate on it. I get along fine with it, so I don't see why 64Gb should be too small as a boot drive...

Windows 8 is a lot fatter somehow, Metro app seems to eat a lot of space.

Re: just bought a 64 GB Samsung 830 SSD, am I mad?

thanks for everyone's help, what I personally discovered is that if you have a fast hard drive like a Samsung F1 1 TB 7200 then you don't get an massive performance boost. I think it's probably when you upgrade from the slower laptop hard drives that the performance is more noticeable. I also understand SSD is a really good for games and massive graphics programs. I'm happy with it but I'm really glad I didn't spend any more. Your mileage may vary as they say though.

I upgraded from two raptors in raid 0 which was much faster than any 7200rpm drive and I noticed a big difference!
