Wireless 802.11ac NAS? Compatibility? Recommendations for NAS?
Guys,
Having recently splurged on an asus 802.11ac router I have turned my thoughts to getting a NAS on the go. Hoping to have this cover backup, movie and music streaming sometime. Another part of the idea would be to place the unit in the attic or something in order to provide resilience to burglary etc.
I'm just unearthing what sort of options are out there at the moment but not actually getting very far!
The two options I have come up with so far given no signs of wireless ac NAS (and barely any N's?):
- Find a NAS which is compatible with a wireless ac card. Guessing unlikely? Maybe a dual band wireless n?
- Find a NAS with 5ghz dual band integrated wireless n?
Power line networking has also been suggested to me, but I've got a feeling that is a can of worms.
About the only thing I've seen is the apple time capsule, but me and apple gear have never got on and they look dodgy too. Seems like a very untapped market somehow.
Thought i'd found a gem when I saw the Synology DiskStation DS213air , but it's turned out only to be single band 2.4ghz. Might do though.
Anybody around these parts tackled the saga recently?
Cheers,
Kev

Not from wireless.
The Air and the Iomega have had their issues from what I have seen. Qnap I think provide a dongle for wireless access, but generally the user experience in terms of latency and performance is not as good as with plain old Gigabit ethernet.

You will find with that router that unless the Wi-Fi signal in attic is really good, network speed will drop off alarmingly the worse the signal is.
Personally for the uses you state I'd go with a homeplug solution, much more reliable and possibly better speeds.

What about WiFi extension points over the power lines like > Devolo 500 AV Wireless+ Adapter - Single for £85.66, 500Mbps Homeplug WiFi Access Point Extender kit (x2) from netgear XWNB5201-100UKS for £116.89 or Devolo 500 AV Wireless+ Kit???
Or could go always with some simple AP with PoE top of each room and a simple central HUB/Switch/router. That for sure would have better coverage that a single unit plus you don't have to worry about next door overpowering your signal.

Can you not just plug a USB hard drive into the router and get the router to share the data?
Otherwise, plug a NAS into a router LAN ethernet port.
The problem with an integrated NAS/access point device is that it is unlikely to be class leading in either role let alone both.
I run a Linux server as a NAS, it is shared over direct gigabit backbone to my PC as well as Homeplug-AV 500Mbit links and WiFi to the rest of the house.
