Boot times slower than before

Yeah I'd check the benchmark numbers just to be sure there's not something major wrong (it'll be obvious if there is). If there isn't, then just use the computer like normal for a few days, could be windows just needs to build up the superfetch profiles again.

I've already ran a bench in Magician and I remember that my read/writes we're higher than they were supposed to be but the IOPS ones were quite a bit lower

It's normal for numbers to vary a bit with firmware updates, but a small drop in IOPS shouldn't be noticeable. Actually, do you mean you've measured before and after and observed a drop, or do you just mean they're lower vs the box specs? Take MFR performance specs with a pinch of salt.

edit: do you want me to run HD Tune for just the SSD, or for all of the drives?

DId a read test in HD Tune. I got an average of 406MBs, but here they got 457. It won't let me run a write test due to partitions...The only partitions I have are a sytem one, and the OP set by Magician. Would OP be causing the partition error, and would simply disabling it be ok?

Edit: After looking at some other forum posts regarding slow speeds on Sammy SSD's, I tried turning of OP (which is supposed to help performance :/) turning it off made a boost to bring the reads to about 420MBs, which is still a fair bit off the 450+ I should be getting...

But my scores the first time I ran the benchmark were higher than in the test HExus did, so that doesn't really explain why my reads are slower in HD Tune, or even why bootup is a bit slow too...

Also, I went to check if my 4K was aligned, and I did it in command prompt. I have two partitions, a 100MB and 209GB apparently, and although the 100MB partition's offset is 1024KB, the bigger one has an offset of 101MB - so is this aligned properly then?

My mate also has a new 840, first time it got installed boots were slow because the HDD hadn't been disconnected.
I re-installed without the HDD and boot times were SUPER quick.

1024k + 100MB = 101MB, it measures offset from the start of the drive. If you formatted the drive under 7, don't worry about it.

Different programs can report different speeds, so don't compare AS-SSD results to HD-Tune for example. I have two M4s and they vary a bit in performance, and even between tests you should allow for a bit of error.

Try to think of anything you might have changed immediately before you noticed the drop in performance. AFAIK performance shouldn't noticeably degrade for no reason - a load of random writes filling the drive with TRIM disabled can really stress some drives, but after enabling TRIM and using normally, it should recover fine after a while.

I don't think there's anything I changed. I know I added OP, and I updated the SSD firmware, and also added another hard drive.

Oh. I also remember that on this version of Windows, I moved my user tree to the 1TB hard drive, and made some system backups (which I've now deleted and will see if this made a difference to boot up)
And that's all I can think of.

I saw in one forum that someone suggested logging off (not shutting down) and leaving the PC on overnight to let the TRIM/garbage handle everything. Not sure if that made much of a difference, but I'm willing to try it.
I've also changed the size of the pagefile from "system managed" to 2GB. And that's about it.

All of it? That might cost you some boot up time as Windows now has to wait for your mechanical drive to spin up before loading the user profile.

The alignment is fine, only need to worry about alignment is on Windows XP and linux distros as Vista, Win 7 and Win 8 support supports SSD and automatically set up the partition for you. 100 MB is the system reserve which I am guessing you are running Windows 7.

BUt even if having the user tree on the HDD slows down the boot time, it doesn't explain why my reads are a bit slow. I guess running AS SSD properly will help.

No, the 'my documents' type stuff is fine to be moved across, that won't slow up the boot. I thought you meant everything under /users.

Am I right in thinking stopping everything that runs from the C drive whilst doing the AS SSD bench would be more accurate?

edit: I unplugged the sata cable for the 2TB hard drive, and although the time spent in the BIOS seemed to be roughly the same, windows boot up was fast definately faster, although HDTune still shows a max read of 400

Turned my PC on again - boot up has gone from 30 seconds to less than 20! BUt still 5-10 seconds longer than it used to be But I can now confirm all of the extra time is in the BIOS

As you have reset the bios the boot menu/splash delay will be set to (if I remember correctly) 3 seconds. Change it to 1.

Was your last install uefi or legacy boot? And what is it now?

Have you run the performance score in system? It sets some Ssd flags in the registry.

Have you tried a new sata cable (would not be the first time a cable is to blame)

It goes ssd then optical drive.

I have done that before, but it didn't make a difference. Edit : I changed it to 0 before so I'll try 1.
