Boot times slower than before
I have a Sammy 840 250gb running the latest firmware. Since I got it, I've reinstalled windows and I find that booting up takes a lot longer now. The only changes I've made are updating the firmware, adding another hard drive and making a windows system backup...
Would any of these make the difference?
Re: Boot times slower than before
What's the other hard drive? I take it you've error checked to make sure the disks are fine?
I once had exactly the same problem with a duff second disk - no data on it, so I couldn't tell it was bust, but it was slowing the whole machine down.
Re: Boot times slower than before
Running software on boot from 2nd drive?
Re: Boot times slower than before
The second hard drive is a 1tb WD black. The extra drive I added (mentioned in op) was a 2tb Seagate barracuda. I have data on it but I haven't done any real test for errors
OS is windows 7 64bit on the ssd
I also have gta iv installed on the ssd which seems to load slower than on the hard drive...
edit: forgot to mention that upon boot up, it seems to take a long time on the asus splash screen before getting to the windows GUI. Before the windows reinstall I used to finish booting before the windows flag even fully loaded...now I have to wait a few seconds.
Beginning to think a reinstall of windows may be the solution to this :(
Re: Boot times slower than before
How did you reinstall Windows? Just direct from the disc?
Re: Boot times slower than before
Did you remove the old HDD when you reinstalled?
If you don\'t although the OS is actually stored on the SSD the boot records are still on the HDD.
Re: Boot times slower than before
You could try booting without the extra drives attached, provided they\'re not essential for boot, to see if it helps at all.
If the extra time is spent on the BIOS splash screen then Windows will have no impact. A firmware update could have potentially caused the drive to take longer to initialise; check for newer firmware versions which may alleviate the problem. Also, simply adding extra drives could feasibly add time to POST.
Have you made any changes to BIOS settings? Enabling extra on-board devices may increase POST time, so disabling things like floppy/IDE/1394/serial/parallel/etc controllers could shave off a few seconds if you don\'t need them.
Also, are you using the drive in AHCI mode, and is TRIM enabled? Don\'t just go and change this in BIOS as Windows will fail to boot unless you make a few changes to the registry first.
Re: Boot times slower than before
Check for the latest chipset software if they are available and update it.
Are the SSD and HDD plugged into the intel SATA ports, not the marvel?
If the windows is newly installed, is the indexing disable?
Re: Boot times slower than before
I\'d advise against disabling indexing if you ever use search - despite what some \'experts\' keep parroting, SSD doesn\'t come close to alleviating the need for an index DB, and disabling it really shouldn\'t make any difference here.
I agree about checking what the drives are connected to though - where possible, use the chipset ports and disable any extra controllers if they\'re not used.
Re: Boot times slower than before
How do I do this? I only have two sata 3 ports on my motherboard
Re: Boot times slower than before
They\'ll probably be on the chipset so I wouldn\'t worry about it.

I think I did. Although I'm not 100% sure.

I know that it could be bios related but as I said, performance is slow in windows too.. Not all of the extra time is on bios but some of it is... I'll reset the bios to defaults just to be sure. Ahci and trim are activated.

I know the ssd is up to date, but I'll check for updates for everything else. Indexing is disabled on the ssd, but activated on the 1tb hdd.
Re: Boot times slower than before
What seems slower exactly?
Also check what's running at boot time; have you installed any extra software or added maps to a NAS?
Re: Boot times slower than before
What is your motherboard model?
To see what is running upon startup as watercooled mention, run 'msconfig' and on 'System Configuration' windows click startup tab to see the list.
Re: Boot times slower than before
It's a Asus P8Z77 V-LX.
Obviously boot times are slower, but I also found logging in to be a bit slower (might be normal and due to installing programs) and like I mentioned, GTA is pretty slow to boot too.
On startup are quite a few things, most of them I need...
Re: Boot times slower than before
I would download HDTune and start speed checking and error checking, see if anything seems like it's running slower than it ought to or is throwing up errors.
Usually googling for HDTune and your model of hard drive shows some results indicating what you ought to expect.
