    SSD upgrade question (Raid)

Ok so my knowledge is a bit rusty here so passing the question to you awesome lot

Which would be faster, 1x 512gb SSD or 2x striped 256gb drives, cost wise there about the same.

No normally I would say the striped pair obviously but SSD's seem to have reached a point where they max out the SATA bus?

On a SATA 6gb controller, the 6gb speed is shared across all lanes right? not 6gb per lane?

    Re: SSD upgrade question (Raid)

On some of the drives, the bigger models have double the speed of the smaller models, IIRC because they have some form of internal striping. If yours was one of those, then the speed difference will likely be negligible.

Personally, I'd go for one just for simplicity and expandability. Even if it is faster it's not going to make any difference.

Buy a single disk and avoid doubling your risk of data loss - the benefits of raid0 are very specific (fast scratch location where loss of data in said location is unimportant, for example), but the performance gains to be had from striping 2 SSDs are negligible.

    Re: SSD upgrade question (Raid)

Cheers, I understand the risk in striping the drives, done it before never had a issue, come to think of it I have never really had a drive fail so not bothered there, it will only have the OS / Apps / Steam so nothing critical.

Had a look around but couldn't really find any comparison benchmarks?

    Re: SSD upgrade question (Raid)

I had two 30gb vertex SSD's then upgraded to two 128gb m4 drives. Now gone for a single big drive but only for cost reasons.

It flies with SSD drives in raid! Antivirus scans took minutes and did use the full striped speed. If I could afford it I would buy another 500gb SSD!

Have a look at the 500gb Sammy 840. There's £40 cashback and I picked up one off of amazon for £250. Take the cashback off and that's cheap!
