PERC Cards and current chipsets

Does anyone know what the deal is with Dell PERC cards and the current crop of chipsets?

When I first build my server it was AMD because of the problems with Intel chipsets at the time. Has this improved?

I'm going to be re-building in the next few months and I'm looking for a motherboard with at least three PCIe 4x slots (two 5i and one 6i cards). Performance isn't a concern, it won't be under a huge load, just file and media serving.

Tried a Perc 5i in a Z68 and Z77 recently, worked in both without taping up any contacts.

Would Intel be the recommended system these days? Power wise I could get away with an i3. Looks like I would need to spend about £100 for a board with three full sized PCIe slots.
