    Boot time with SSD

    Hi all

I recently replaced my old HDD with a shiny new Samsung 840 SSD. I used the Samsung software to clone my existing Windows install onto the SSD.

The difference in speed in Windows is fantastic, particularly things like X-Plane 10 which used to take forever to load up. Benchmarks from AS SSD look fine too, and the 2 little numbers at top-left are green and suggest the offset alignment is OK.

However, the only bit I'm not totally convinced on is the boot time. The old HDD takes about 68 secs to get to the desktop, whereas the SSD takes 45 sec. I know that's a reasonable improvement and, to be fair, it does also take less time before the desktop is actually usable, than with the HDD. I'm just curious what sort of boot times the rest of you get with SSD's though - is 45 secs in the right ball park?

BTW, to confirm - I'm using Win 7 Ultimate x64, and I'm timing from the POST beep to the desktop appearing.

    cheers

    Danny

    Re: Boot time with SSD

It takes approximately 30 sec including POST to boot to my work laptop running Windows 7.

The slowdown issues would be usually startup programs.

    Re: Boot time with SSD

Less than that I'm sure although mine is getting slower. I would have gone for a fresh install tbh.

UEFI bios what not makes a bigger difference in my opinion than a jump from SATA2 to SATA3.

    Re: Boot time with SSD

Thanks guys, sounds like my boot time's at least in the right ball park, if a little on the slow side. I know a fresh install would've been preferable, but I just couldn't be bothered, especially as I only have 4mbit internet and it takes forever to re-download all the OS patches, Steam apps, etc.

    Re: Boot time with SSD

tbh I'm all confused about download speeds. If I was reinstall I would leave my PC on overnight with automatic updates on and get task scheduler to restart every couple of hours. I can get up to megabyte/second; apparently you're on up to 0.5.

    Re: Boot time with SSD

Yeah, my speed in megabits/sec is 4, which translates to the download speeds I get of just over 500kb/sec. It's pretty lame in this day and age, but BT couldn't be arsed to fibre my local street cabinet. That means I'm waiting on the goverment-sponsored superfast scheme, if it ever happens. It was originally promised by 2015, now it's 2017.......grrrrr.

I feel your pain Danny! I'm living off 2.2Mb at the moment, I get approximately 280Kbps when downloading anything.

    Re: Boot time with SSD

My 20Mb often get throttled to less than 1Mb.
My boot time from POST is less than 15 seconds, although it's longer with my third hdd installed

    Re: Boot time with SSD

As the others have said I would of gone for a fresh install. I did it myself last month and it took all of 20 minutes to install Windows 7 w/ SP1 from a USB stick, another 5 minutes to install 90% off the apps I use via http://ninite.com/ (awesome website/software) and then you can let windows update do its thing while AFK

    Re: Boot time with SSD

Win 7 x64 pro here, boot to desktop is around 25 seconds, though that includes me typing my password in. Would be quicker if I had a more modern motherboard as it's an X58 so still using BIOS rather than UEFI.

    Re: Boot time with SSD

Thanks for all the comments. I haven't really paid much attention to this UEFI stuff before, as this Z77 mobo is the first one I've had that supports UEFI.

I was up early this morning as the nipper woke up at 6am, so had a quick play with BIOS settings. I tried changing the SSD to UEFI boot, but then the system can't see it - at which point I realised you must have to set UEFI and then (re)install Windows. So I'm going to bite the bullet and start reinstalling today (have sneaked the PC into work and stuck it under my desk )

It may take another day or so but I'll post back with results.

    Re: Boot time with SSD

    Wow.

I reinstalled Windows this morning with UEFI boot, and from POST to desktop now takes 15 seconds. It doesn't even have time to finish the animated boot screen bit, and from there I don't even see the light-blue 'Please wait' screen.....just straight to the desktop.

Reformatting didn't actually take as long as I'd feared anyway - I managed to copy across a lot of stuff from the backup image I took first, such as SteamApps folder (56Gb), drivers etc. I hadn't reformatted for about best part of 3 years so it was well overdue anyway.

Thanks again for all the comments and nags to reformat - well worth the effort

My boot time is 18 secs with Windows 7 and Crucial M4 drive. I'm sure there are lot more faster SSDs but I doubt they may make a great deal of difference to booting speed.
